Vt. reopens last highway destroyed by Irene (AP)

STOCKBRIDGE, Vt. ? After hundreds of thousands of tons of rock were hauled out and tens of thousands of man-hours were spent, Vermont celebrated the completion of the biggest single engineering challenge following the flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Irene.

Just in time for the new year, and four months after the storm hit, Route 107 between Bethel and Stockbridge was reopened Thursday. The state highway, a major east-west thoroughfare, is the last to reopen after being closed by flooding.

The road's reopening was marked with a ceremony at a Stockbridge school, where scores of local residents and state officials tossed fluorescent orange baseball caps into the air.

"It will cut our commute time down, it will lessen our trauma of looking at all the damage and the moonscape," said Stockbridge resident Melissa Thompson, who had to navigate a 70-minute detour to get her son to school and to get to work for the past few months. "We'll probably miss all the flaggers (who) we got to know on the way. It just means so much to us to not have to make that commute every day."

Much remains to be done on Route 107 and across the state, but Vermonters used the reopening as a moment to pause and celebrate. Many people are still struggling to rebuild their homes and their lives. The state is just totaling up the bill, and the Legislature is preparing to deal with a variety of Irene-induced, long-term challenges.

The repair of Route 107 posed one of the biggest tests following the storm that left a dozen towns cut off from the outside world for days, damaged or destroyed more than 500 miles of roads and 200 bridges, killed six and reshaped much of the low-lying countryside.

Irene ripped up Vermont on Aug. 28. The downtowns of communities from Whitingham in southern Vermont to Waterbury, just west of Montpelier, were flooded to levels not seen since the state's epic flood of 1927.

Neale Lunderville, the state's appointed chief recovery officer, said it would be years before many Vermont families are back to what he calls "a new normal."

"If we want to have a robust recovery and one that brings us back to a place where we are stronger, smarter and safer than before Irene, we have to continue to remember what Irene did and what we need to do to recover from that," Lunderville said. "It's going to take a concerted effort and ongoing attention at high levels in order for us to have a really strong recovery."

The stretch of highway between Bethel and Stockbridge is one of the state's major east-west arteries, and sections of the highway were part of the riverbank where the road and the White River pass through a narrow cut in the Green Mountains. Irene's run through Vermont funneled record volumes of water through that narrow pass, where it tore riverbanks to pieces.

"All of a sudden the road ended and then we were looking at river and mud and what used to be huge sheets of asphalt that had shifted into the river," said Maine Army National Guard Capt. Norman Stickney, of Gardiner, who arrived five days after the storm. "It was like something fell from the sky and completely crushed all of the asphalt and scooped it away and dumped it into the river."

In the three-mile section of road that was hardest hit, about 4,000 feet of Route 107 was completely gone, said Vermont Transportation Agency Engineer Eric Foster, who oversaw the rebuilding of the highway. A job that would normally take two years was done in 119 days after the first work crews ? the soldiers from the Maine National Guard and other states ? arrived.

In addition to the guard, it took two contractors, 250,000 tons of rock, at least 20,000 hours of heavy equipment time, 7,500 feet of guardrail, 38 culverts and 46 companies over 16 weeks to repair the highway, according to information provided by the Vermont Transportation Agency.

The biggest challenge was getting the rocks and other fill material to Bethel. A special "rock train" was used to bring fill from distant quarries before it was unloaded a couple of miles from the work site. The train saved an estimated 6,600 truck trips.

In other parts of the state, officials have said some of the repairs done on the fly to get traffic moving again might have to be redone. That's not the case for Route 107.

The roadway was built with layers of different sized rock and the banks sloped to withstand another Irene, said Glenn Cairns, of the Windham, N.H., contractor George Cairns and Sons, which brought its specialized equipment ? excavators and dump trucks that are up to twice the size of those usually found on Vermont highway projects.

It's designed to withstand another "Irene, plus two feet," said Foster.

Both Stickney and Cairn said they were amazed by how grateful Vermonters were despite the challenges they faced.

"Even though these people, their lives were turned upside down, they were friendly," Cairns said. "They really didn't mind sitting in traffic waiting for us ? the hardship that they went through and everybody was just thankful and waved and smiled.

"They went through a lot. I could understand how they could be bitter, `Why isn't my road back together?' But I've got to say the people were just extremely friendly and welcoming."

Netgear Universal Internet Adapter for Home Entertainment-3D (XAVB5004)

If the onslaught of internet-ready HDTVs, blu-ray players, and gaming consoles has you thinking you have to wire your home with CAT-5 cabling, think again. With the Netgear Universal Internet Adapter for Home Entertainment-3D (XAVB5004) you can install a 4-port gigabit Ethernet switch right next to your home entertainment devices in a matter of minutes and without breaking a sweat. The XAVB5004 ($169.99 list) is a powerline networking solution that uses your home?s electrical wiring as a conduit for network traffic. While not as speedy as a dedicated CAT-5 setup, Netgear's powerlin offering provides more than enough throughput for streaming video from online services like Netflix and Hulu, and it offers two ways to prioritize network traffic for applications that require maximum bandwidth. Its flaws are minor; the adapter heats up after half an hour of use, and the user manual is not included in the box.

Features and Specs

Included in the XAVB5004 kit is an XAV5001 Powerline 500 AV adapter, an XAV5004 Powerline 500AV 4-port adapter and power cord, two Ethernet cables, and a Resource CD with a quick install guide and Netgear?s Powerline Utility. As with the XAV5001 kit, Netgear does not include a user's guide on the CD but provides a link to one on their website. ?

The XAV5001 adapter is the same one that comes with the Powerline AV 500 Powerline Adapter Kit and measures 3.3 x 2.5 x 1.5 inches (HWD). The glossy white adapter weighs 0.4 pounds and sports three LED indicators that provide power and network activity status. ?A blinking green Power light means that the adapter is starting up or is going through a security setup, while a solid light means the adapter is powered up and ready to go. The light turns amber when the adapter goes into power saving mode.

The second light is the Powerline indicator. It glows various colors when the adapter is connected to a network and blinks when transmitting or receiving data. A solid green light means it has a link rate that is greater than 80 Mbps and an amber light means the link rate is somewhere between 50-80 Mbps. A red light indicates a slow rate of less than 50 Mbps. The third LED is solid green when the port is linked and blinks when there is network activity. The Ethernet port is located on the bottom of the adapter and there are Factory Reset and Security buttons on the right side. The housing has vents to help dissipate heat but the adapter tends to run warm after being plugged in for more than half an hour.

The XAV5004 is a 4-port switch. It has a shiny black finish and measures 1.2 x 5.4 x 3.9 inches (HWD). The Netgear logo is stamped on the top of the adapter, and there are three LEDs on the front panel that have? the same characteristics as the indicators on the XAV5001, with one small difference; the Power LED glows a solid blue when powered up and blinks blue when resetting or going through the security setup. You don?t get status LEDS for individual each port like you do with the D-Link DHP540 switch.

At the rear of the switch are four color-coded and numbered Ethernet ports, a security button, a recessed button for restoring the switch to its factory defaults, and a two?pronged power jack. The number 1 and 2 ports have green labels that identify them as high priority QoS (Quality of Service) ports for connecting to gaming consoles and HDTVs, for example. Data coming and going through these ports is given priority over other network traffic to ensure smooth video and multimedia playback. You can also set QoS priorities manually using the Netgear Powerline Utility.

Installation

Installing the XAVB5004 kit is painless. Start by plugging the XAV5001 adapter into an outlet close to your router and connect it to the router with one of the Ethernet cables. Next, plug the XAV5004 switch into an outlet as close to your internet-ready devices as possible. Use the Powerline LED to determine which outlet offers the best connectivity as not all outlets provide the same link rate. For example, you?ll want a solid green light for streaming HD video to an HDTV.

If you want to add 128-bit AES encryption, push the security button on the switch and hold it for two seconds until it blinks. Within two minutes, press the security button on the second adapter and it will be assigned the same randomly generated encryption key as the first adapter. You now have a four port gigabit switch that can be used to bring wired Ethernet to all of your home entertainment devices, including web-enabled HDTVs and blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and streaming boxes such as Roku, Boxee, and Apple TV.

In addition to assigning QoS priority, the Powerline Utility software scans your network and displays the model number, MAC address, and firmware version of each connected device. Clicking on a device gives you the ability to name it and manually assign an encryption key and a QoS priority. You can also update the firmware with the click of a mouse button.

Performance

The XAVB5004 kit worked like a charm. The Powerline Utility detected a link rate of 500 Mbps from the adapter to the router and 156 Mbps from the adapter to the switch, which is more than adequate for streaming HD video and right in line with the DHP540?s rate of 158 Mbps. Episodes of The Office in HD streaming via Netflix played smoothly with no trace of lag and the soundtrack was perfectly synced to the video. Copying a 100MB folder via the XAVB5004 took 17 seconds, while a 500MB folder took 1 minute and 13 seconds. The D-Link DHP-540 was a bit faster with speeds of 13 seconds (100 MB) and 1 minute and 8 seconds (500 MB). By way of comparison, it took 1 minute and 18 seconds to copy the 100MB folder over my wireless 802.11 N network and a whopping 9 minutes and 25 seconds to copy the 500 MB folder.

If you?re looking to bring wired Ethernet to your home theater components or simply want faster transfer rates than you get with Wi-Fi, the Netgear Universal Internet Adapter for Home Entertainment-3D Kit (XAVB5004) is a reasonably priced solution that installs in minutes. Whereas the pricey D-Link DHP540 ($199.99 list) comes with just the 4-port switch, the XAVB5004 comes with a powerline adapter and a 4-port switch so you can get up and running right out of the box, and it?s around $30 cheaper.? Affordable pricing, ease of use, and solid performance earn the XAVB5004 our Editors? Choice for Powerline networking products.

Odd notes, mad-dash trips mark Iowa closing sprint (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa's GOP presidential contest remains deeply unsettled, if not downright strange, five days before the Jan. 3 caucus.

Rep. Ron Paul, drawing big crowds, got a surprise endorsement Wednesday night from Rep. Michele Bachmann's now-former state chairman.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who has languished for months, suddenly seems to have momentum, just as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich may be losing his.

And Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who began the campaign by de-emphasizing Iowa, might be poised to finish on top, according to some new polls.

Romney now is making an unabashed push in Iowa. His rivals are scrambling to deny him huge momentum heading into the Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire, his second home.

Paul, the 76-year-old libertarian-leaning Texan, drew about 500 people at the Iowa State fairgrounds in Ames late Wednesday. A group of Occupy activists tried to interrupt the rally, but that wasn't the main surprise.

State Sen. Kent Sorenson, who had campaigned a few hours earlier with Bachmann as a state chairman of her bid, announced he would support Paul instead.

Paul's anti-government appeal appears to tap into the desire of a frustrated electorate for profound change in an era of high unemployment and an economy that has only slowly recovered from the recession.

"In the last couple of weeks I fell into Ron Paul's camp," said Bob Colby of Newton, who spent 21 years in the military and is a former employee of a now-shuttered Maytag plant in town.

Paul, who is airing TV ads hitting Romney and Gingrich, planned a town hall meeting Thursday in Perry, Iowa, plus stops in Atlantic and Council Bluffs.

There were other odd campaign notes Wednesday.

Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement disclosed an effort to persuade either Santorum or Bachmann to quit the race and endorse the other. "Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister and a leader among Iowa's social conservatives.

Neither candidate appeared interested.

Meanwhile, an ever more confident Romney scheduled stops Thursday in Cedar Falls, Mason City and Ames. He has air support: TV ads say he has the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in November.

Asked Wednesday about the prospects for back-to-back victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Romney demurred. "I can't possibly allow myself to think in such optimistic terms," he said. "I just have to put my head down and battle as best I can."

Santorum seems to be gaining steam, according to a Time-CNN survey and some private polls. "We're very, very happy with the new numbers," he told reporters in Dubuque.

Acknowledging widespread voter anger in an age of high unemployment, Santorum told an audience Wednesday: "If you want to stick it to the man, don't vote for Ron Paul. That's not sticking it to anybody but the Republican Party."

Santorum, who planned events Thursday in the eastern Iowa towns of Coralville, Wilton, Muscatine and Davenport, says he believes his improved showing reflects voters belief that he "can be trusted" and that "we've got a record to back it up."

He said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show Thursday that he's the only one in the Republican field who "has a track record" of winning elections in states, like Pennsylvania, where it was necessary for GOP candidates to attract independents and Democrats.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry adjusted his position on abortion for a second straight day, telling reporters he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk. On Tuesday, he had told a pastor that he had undergone a "transformation" on abortion rights and now opposed the procedure in cases of rape or incest after having recently met a woman who said she was conceived by a rape.

Asked if a mother's life was the only instance when he would allow abortion, he was concise as he boarded his bus Wednesday: "That's correct."

Perry planned Thursday events in Washington, Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown.

Gingrich, who has suffered a barrage of TV attack ads lately, also took aim at Paul. "I'm very uncomfortable with the idea that the commander in chief would think it was irrelevant to have an Iranian nuclear weapon," he said Wednesday.

Gingrich planned events Thursday in Sioux City, Storm Lake, Denison and Carroll.

Bachmann took aim Wednesday at her two rivals from Texas. She said Perry has spent "27 years as a political insider," and Paul would be "dangerous as president" because of his hands-off views on national security.

Bachmann scheduled events Thursday in Des Moines, Marshalltown and Nevada, Iowa.

Worst year in decades for elephants (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? It's been a disastrous year for elephants, perhaps the worst since ivory sales were banned in 1989 to save the world's largest land animals from extinction, the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC said Thursday.

A record number of large seizures of elephant tusks represents at least 2,500 dead animals and shows that organized crime ? in particular Asian syndicates ? is increasingly involved in the illegal ivory trade and the poaching that feeds it, the group said.

Some of the seized tusks came from old stockpiles, the elephants having been killed years ago. It's not clear how many elephants were recently killed in Africa for their tusks, but experts are alarmed.

TRAFFIC's elephant and rhino expert Tom Milliken thinks criminals may have the upper hand in the war to save rare and endangered animals.

"As most large-scale ivory seizures fail to result in any arrests, I fear the criminals are winning," Milliken told The Associated Press.

Most cases involve ivory being smuggled from Africa into Asia, where growing wealth has fed the desire for ivory ornaments and for rhino horn that is used in traditional medicine, though scientists have proved it has no medicinal value.

"The escalation in ivory trade and elephant and rhino killing is being driven by the Asian syndicates that are now firmly enmeshed within African societies," Milliken said in a telephone interview from his base in Zimbabwe. "There are more Asians than ever before in the history of the continent, and this is one of the repercussions."

All statistics are not yet in, and no one can say how much ivory is getting through undetected, but "what is clear is the dramatic increase in the number of large-scale seizures, over 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds) in weight, that have taken place in 2011," TRAFFIC said in a statement.

There were at least 13 large seizures this year, compared to six in 2010 with a total weight just under 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds).

In the most recent, and worst, case Malaysian authorities seized hundreds of African elephant tusks on Dec. 21 worth $1.3 million that were being shipped to Cambodia. The ivory was hidden in containers of handicrafts from Kenya's Mombasa port. Most large seizures have originated from Kenyan or Tanzanian ports, TRAFFIC said.

Fifty elephants a month are being killed, their tusks hacked off, in Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve, according to the Washington-based Environmental Investigation Agency.

With shipments so large, criminals have taken to shipping them by sea instead of by air, falsifying documents with help of corrupt officials, monitors said.

Milliken said some of the seized ivory has been identified as coming from government-owned stockpiles ? made up of confiscated tusks and those of dead elephants ? in another sign of corruption.

"In 23 years of compiling ivory seizure data ... this is the worst year ever for large ivory seizures. 2011 has truly been a horrible year for elephants," said Milliken.

Rhinos also have suffered. A record 443 rhino were killed in this year in South Africa, compared to 333 last year, according to National Geographic News Watch. South Africa is home to 90 percent of the rhinos left on the continent.

Africa's elephant population was estimated at between 5 million and 10 million before the big white hunters came to the continent with European colonization. Massive poaching for the ivory trade in the 1980s halved the remaining number of African elephants to about 600,000. Following the 1989 ban on ivory trade and concerted international efforts to protect the animals, elephant herds in east and southern Africa were thriving before the new threat arrived from Asia.

A report from Kenya's Amboseli national park highlighted the dangers. There had been almost no poaching in the park, which lies in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, for 30 years until a Chinese company was awarded the contract to build a highway nearby two years ago. Amboseli has lost at least four of its "big tuskers" since then.

Suit raises 'Who owns Twitter account?' issue

By Suzanne Choney

A former writer for the PhoneDog website is being sued by the company not for leaving it, but for leaving with PhoneDog's name as part of his Twitter handle, resulting in a lawsuit and raising the question of who really owns a Twitter name? And is it worth the kind of damages PhoneDog is seeking?

Noah Kravitz is facing the suit by Phone Dog Media, which says that when Kravitz left the company in October 2010, he took with him the Twitter name "Phonedog_Noah" (tied to his personal email) ? and 17,000 followers. The company is seeking damages of $340,000 ? $2.50 a month for every follower for the eight months Kravitz used "Phonedog_Noah" (until he was served with the suit).? He now goes by "noahkravitz."

Kravitz, who has gone public to talk about the issue, said when he left, PhoneDog, which covers cellphone news, said he could continue with the "Phonedog_Noah" account in exchange for tweeting for the company "from time to time."

Phone Dog Media has kept mum ? and definitely not tweeted ? about the lawsuit, but did issue this statement to the New York Times, which recently wrote about the case: ?The costs and resources invested by PhoneDog Media into growing its followers, fans and general brand awareness through social media are substantial and are considered property of PhoneDog Media L.L.C. We intend to aggressively protect our customer lists and confidential information, intellectual property, trademark and brands.?

Kravitz, who now writes for TechnoBuffalo, said he's not sure how PhoneDog came up with the monetary formula it used in seeking damages for the total of $340,000.

"If you took their valuation and if you applied it to the Twitter accounts of somebody like Lady Gaga or Shaq, you'd have the gross domestic product of more than one nation on earth per month," he recently said in a CNN interview.

The case, attorney Henry J. Cittone, a specialist in intellectual property disputes, told the Times, will "establish precedent in the online world, as it relates to ownership of social media accounts."

In the meantime, publicity is bringing Kravitz many other Twitter followers; as of Tuesday, he had more than 23,700 of them.

NM governor proposes $4 million for college prep

Posted at: 12/28/2011 6:35 PM
By: Heather Mills, KOB Eyewitness News 4

Governor Susana Martinez said she wants more students to graduate high school and go on to college.

Wednesday afternoon she announced a plan that would add more than $4 million to the education fund.

Governor Martinez plans to ask lawmakers for that money in the upcoming legislative session. Here's how it breaks down:

- About $700,000 would go toward AP programs across the state. It would also allow all 10th grade students to take the PSAT for free.

- A million would be used for students enrolled in dual credit programs, for books and instructional material. Those programs allow students to earn high school and college credit at the same time.

- The bulk of the funds would go toward short-cycle assessments.

"They're called short-cycle assessments. They're offered throughout the year and they give a teacher an indication of the progress students are making or the lack thereof," said Education Secretary Hanna Skandera.

"Daily this happens so the teacher is able to assess the progress from one day to the next, one week to the next, etc," Martinez added.

The goal is to individualize education and not let any children slip through the cracks. Governor Martinez said some school districts across New Mexico already do short-cycle assessments. That means any funds they previously put toward the tests could go elsewhere.

Skandera said $27 million is allocated toward education each year. The funds for this proposal would come from a small budget surplus for the upcoming year.

iPad Charger Review: Twelve South PlugBug for iPad and MacBook Laptops

iPad Charger Review: Twelve South PlugBug for iPad and MacBook Laptops

Reviewed by Jacob Spindel, December 2011

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 5

What's hot: Brilliantly reduces the number of cables and outlets you'll need.

What's not: May reduce the total length of your MacBook's power cable.

We all know it's a fire hazard to daisy-chain power strips. But if you're a gadget guru like me, your Mac may be sharing desk space with hard drives, speakers, ereaders, televisions, video game equipment, or maybe even the occasional toaster. With this many devices vying for electricity, it's easy to run out of available outlets fast. Don't you wish your MacBook and iPad could somehow share one outlet? With the new PlugBug from Twelve South, they can do exactly that.

Creative Outlet

Every MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air comes with some version of Apple's MagSafe power cable. One end of the cable plugs into your MacBook, and on the other end is the AC adaptor brick. Apple includes two different detachable options to connect to the power brick: prongs for plugging it directly into a power outlet, and a longer cable if you need a few extra feet.

The PlugBug provides you with a third option to connect to the MagSafe AC adaptor: It is a deep red, L-shaped add-on that piggybacks onto the AC adaptor using the same power connector as the two options included by Apple (thus making your AC adaptor slightly taller). On one side of the PlugBug are the usual prongs for plugging it into an electrical outlet, but on the other side is a 10-Watt USB charging port, so you can plug in your iPad and charge both your MacBook and your iPad with one charger. Besides freeing up a precious outlet in your home, you will also need to bring one fewer cable while traveling. Genius!

You could also use the PlugBug to charge an iPhone, iPod, or pretty much anything else that charges over USB. However, the device's primary appeal is to iPad owners, since iPhones and iPods can charge while connected directly to your computer's USB, whereas iPads generally cannot.

In our tests, the PlugBug was pretty trivial to install - it just snaps together with your MagSafe AC adaptor, almost like Lego blocks, although you may have to push quite hard at first. Twelve South's photos of the PlugBug often depict it as lining up flush with the AC adaptor, making it look like a seamless extension of the adaptor itself. However, with our 13-inch MacBook Pro's AC adaptor, the PlugBug was actually about a centimeter shorter than the adaptor, meaning they did not line up perfectly. This makes the appearance slightly less classy, but it has no effect on functionality.

Once you have the PlugBug connected, there is nothing else you have to do; we were able to charge our iPad and MacBook simultaneously, and it worked just as well as charging them separately. The only real downside is that it requires your AC adaptor to be directly connected to the outlet, so if you've been accustomed to using the longer cable instead of the short prongs, adding the PlugBug to your setup may cost you a few feet length from your MacBook's power cable.

The Perfect Plug

The PlugBug by Twelve South is the kind of product that makes you say, "Why didn't anybody else think of this?" It only does one thing, and it is a pretty simple and self-explanatory thing at that, but it is nonetheless a very clever and original solution for charging both a MacBook and an iPad from a single outlet, which comes in handy for travelers and office workers alike. I fully recommend the PlugBug as an innovative way to free up outlets and ease the burden on travelers, and all without offending the fire marshall.

Israel to fan flames with Turkey as it discusses recognising Armenian genocide

The education committee began discussing a proposal to mark April 24, the day when Turkish mass killings of Armenians started in 1915, as a memorial day for "the massacre of the Armenian people."

A similar proposal was rejected by parliament in 2007, when ties between Israel and Turkey were warm.

But relations plunged into deep crisis last year when Israeli forces killed nine Turks in a raid on a Turkish ferry, part of an activist flotilla seeking to breach Israel's naval blockade of Gaza.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their kinsmen died in orchestrated killings during the final years of the Ottoman Empire.

But the Turkish government strongly denies this, saying 300,000 Armenians and as many Turks were killed in civil conflict when the Christian Armenians, backed by Russia, rose up against the Ottoman Empire.

France's lower house voted last week to criminalise the denial of genocide in Armenia, prompting Turkey to suspend political and military co-operation.

Iran seeks death penalty for US man 'deceived' by CIA

An American man accused by Iran of working for the CIA could face the death penalty, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Tuesday.

In a closed court hearing, the prosecution applied for capital punishment, the report said, because the suspect, identified as Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, "admitted that he received training in the United States and planned to imply that Iran was involved in terrorist activities in foreign countries" after returning to the U.S.

The report said Hekmati repeated a confession broadcast on state TV Dec. 18 .

Under the Iranian law spying can lead to death penalty only in military cases.

'A new source'
The Fars report said Hekmati's lawyer, who was identified only by his surname, Samadi, denied the charges.

Story: Iran says woman's stoning case might change to hanging

In court on Tuesday, Hekmati confessed to having links with the CIA but said he had no intention to harm Iran.

"I was deceived by the CIA ... Although I was appointed to break into Iran's intelligence systems and act as a new source for the CIA, I had no intention of undermining the country," Fars quoted Hekmati as saying.

No date for the next court hearing was released.

On Tuesday U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Washington was aware of news reports indicating that Hekmati's trial had started and again urged Tehran to release him immediately.

He said that Switzerland, which represents U.S. interests in Iran in the absence of formal diplomatic ties between the two countries, had formally requested permission for consular access to Hekmati on December 24 but that Iran had again refused.

Hekmati, 28, was born in Arizona. His family is of Iranian origin. His father, who lives in Michigan, said his son is not a CIA spy and was visiting his grandmothers in Iran when he was arrested.

Russia seizes Iran-bound radioactive material

Iran charges that as a U.S. Marine, he received special training and served at U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan before heading to Iran for his alleged intelligence mission.

Current and former U.S. government officials told Reuters in November that Iran had succeeded in uncovering the identities of several CIA informants.

The United States is leading efforts to tighten sanctions on Iran which it accuses of seeking nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies. Washington and Israel say they do not rule out making military strikes on Iran's nuclear sites if diplomacy fails.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Google pays Mozilla close to a billion dollars to stay the default search engine in Firefox

There is a good reason why companies like Mozilla can give away their software for free. That?s because they get a lot from search engine providers to include their search engines inside the browser. So far Google has been the default search engine in Firefox and now they have signed another three-year contract with Mozilla to keep their position at the top of the search box.

This time however, they are paying a lot more to Mozilla than they did last time, almost three times as much. Google will be paying around $300 million per year for three years, which is close to a billion dollars. So how did Google suddenly become so generous? The reason is Microsoft.

Microsoft has been trying for some time to make Bing the default search engine in Firefox. It may be a rival browser but it still is very popular and becoming the default search engine in Firefox would instantly increase the popularity of Bing.

Actually, Microsoft wasn?t the only other participant in the race. Yahoo! too was after becoming the default search engine in Firefox. Of course Google could not just stand around and see their business being taken away from them like that. After all, Google earns their money through ads and most of the ads are delivered within search results. So even though Firefox is a rival to Google?s Chrome, they had to pony up the cash, and lots of it too, to keep their cash registers ringing.

However, with Firefox?s market share slowly dwindling thanks to Google?s own Chrome, this might not turn out to be a very good investment for Google, although I?m sure Mozilla would disagree with me, once they?re done counting all the money.

Windows 8 Picture Password is 'Fisher-Price Toy'

@ 2011/12/26 It would seem that not everyone is impressed with the picture password feature in Windows 8. The inventor of RSA's SecurID token actually said the new feature is like a "Fisher-Price toy." It would be funny to see Microsoft challenge him to defeat it. "I don't think it's serious security." All in all, "It's more like a Fisher-Price toy than a serious choice for secure computer access," he says. Still, it's better than nothing, he says, and it is raising awareness of login security.

Japan looking to buy Chinese government bonds (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Japan will seek to buy Chinese government bonds, the Japanese government said in a statement issued after Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held talks in Beijing with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday.

The statement given to reporters gave no details of when Japan might seek to buy the bonds or on what scale.

Japan had earlier indicated it is in talks to buy Chinese government debt to strengthen economic ties.

Despite sometimes rancorous political ties between the two neighbors, Japan's economic fortunes are increasingly tied to China's economic growth and consumer demand.

China has been Japan's biggest trading partner since 2009.

In 2010, trade between the two nations grew by 22.3 percent compared to levels in 2009, reaching 26.5 trillion yen ($339.3 billion), according to the Japan External Trade Organization.

China and Japan are also the world's first and second-biggest holders of foreign reserves.

Taylor Swift, Adele: Vogue Cover Girls?

Swift and Adele are rumored to be gracing the covers of the February and March issues, respectively.
By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift and Adele might be joining the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Britney Spears as the latest pop superstars to grace the cover of famed fashion magazine Vogue.

Fashionista.com reports that after some initial speculation about who had made the final cut, sources confirm that Swift will appear on the February issue and that Adele has been tapped for March, which also happens to be the spring fashion issue.

A rep for the magazine wouldn't confirm or deny the reports, simply telling MTV News in an email, "We don't comment on future cover speculation."

New York magazine's the Cut blog reports that speculation about Adele's cover began to spread when the magazine was reportedly asking designers to provide clothes in her size.

"Designers have been asked by the title to make special cover outfits for the full-figured chart-topper for the all-important March issue," according to the report, which first surfaced on Women's Wear Daily. Adele previously appeared on the cover of the October issue of Vogue U.K.

Meanwhile, Swift has appeared on the cover of the tween version of the magazine, Teen Vogue, and was spotted with editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at the Rodarte Spring 2012 show at Fashion Week, where she also sat alongside November's cover girl, "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" star Rooney Mara.

In other magazine news, V Magazine has confirmed that Justin Bieber will appear on its cover, which hits newsstands on January 12. The cover was shot by photographers Inez and Vinoodh, who worked with Lady Gaga on her "Yoü and I" short films. The Bieber cover was styled by the Mother Monster's right-hand man, Nicola Formichetti.

Scott Mendelson: Review: Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol Is a Thrilling and Ingenious Action Film

Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol is an outstanding action thriller that happens to be the fourth entry in a long-running franchise (series retrospective). Like the three previous entries, this is a mostly stand-alone picture that feels absolutely like the work of its director. And if this entry feels a bit more like "just another day at the office" than the prior entries, it makes up for it with uncommonly impressive big-screen splendor. There is beautiful location work and obscenely impressive stunt-work that reminds us how wonderful action films can be when we are seeing something astounding while still being able to believe our eyes. It is easily the best entry since Brian DePalma's initial installment way back in 1996 and a top-notch piece of genre filmmaking. ?It is easily the best?espionage?action-picture since Martin Campbell's?Casino Royale?and it is simply relentlessly engaging entertainment. ?It is also a glorious return to form for Tom Cruise, as the film operates as a 133-minute rebuttal to those who would declare Cruise's career to be dead and buried.

The plot is pretty simple, arguably the most straightforward of the series. ?In brief, a crazed Russian politician wants to incite nuclear war so that the planet may be cleansed and born anew, and he's doing the classic 'pit two superpowers against each other' gimmick to make it happen (Ernst Stavro Blofeld really should have?patented?that one... ) After IMF is implicated in a terrorist attack in Russia, a disavowed Ethan Hunt and his bare-bones team are forced to go off the grid in order to stop all-out nuclear?devastation. That's pretty much all the story you need. The film is mostly a series of action set-pieces, but the picture is able to work character development into the action beats. The film almost operates as a procedural, as we spend most of our time in the planning stages of a given operation or the actual execution of said scheme. But nearly every?set-piece?is a winner, with the entire second act giving way to a scene of ever-rising tension and?escalating stakes that stands as one of the finest extended action sequences in recent years.

Like the confident pro he is, Brad Bird shoots the action in fluid takes and long shots that establish a clear sense of geography and allows the audience to appreciate the technical work and old-school stunts at play. Of course, if you have the opportunity to see this in an IMAX theater, don't even think about seeing it in a regular 35mm auditorium. ?There are a good 30 minutes of footage actually shot on IMAX film, and they are absolutely glorious. ?But beyond the visceral thrills on display, Bird and company know exactly when to go for a joke and when to stay serious, and they know that nothing makes an action sequences as convincing as when the actor looks and acts genuinely terrified to be doing it. ?Aside from the large-scale stunt-work, there is plenty of convincing hand-to-hand combat as well and the whole film serves as a reminder of how great an action movie can be when it has great action.

Despite rumblings that Jeremy Renner was being brought in as a torch-passing replacement, Tom Cruise dominates the proceedings with such pure zeal that the picture acts as a cleansing ritual for the last six years of public-relations issues. Cruise has always excelled when playing characters of pure intensity, and here his trademark sprints become a metaphor for his pledge to absolutely entertain you even if it kills him. Once again, Cruise does a number of absolutely insane stunts and wins the audience's empathy by being just as freaked out by them as you or I might be. In his fourth turn as Ethan Hunt, Cruise is basically daring the audience to declare him "over," basically saying "You may think I'm crazy in real life, but I WILL win you back by reminding you how much you love my movies!"

Renner does fine supporting work, and it's a charming and low-key turn that allows him to play the unabashed hero for the first time since he became a star. ?He has been cast in about 600 in-production would-be franchises, and this film offers a taste of what he can bring to the table. Paula Patton gets the weakest share of the pie, as she is saddled with a needless "crisis of confidence" back-story?and then briefly sidelined during the climax so that Renner can step in and help save the day (and her third-act scenes of sloppily attempting to seduce Anil Kapoor are almost discomforting). Simon Pegg returns as the comic relief from the last picture, and he's a better fit this time around in this altogether lighter entry. ?The film?genuinely?misses the growing friendship between Ethan Hunt and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), but the new team?acquits?themselves nicely to the mission at hand. ?Ironically despite the?absence?of the one continuing supporting character from the prior films, this entry actually works as an almost direct sequel to Mission: Impossible III, as Ethan's marriage is referenced on several occasions (Yay... continuity!).

Alas, one of the core problems with the film is the lack of a omnipresent villain. ?Michael Nyqvist barely makes an impression as the lead?antagonist and he pales in comparison to even Dougray Scott in the second film, let alone Philip Seymour Hoffman's icily detached arms dealer during the last go-around. ?Also somewhat annoying is the lack of a real theme to this entry. ?The first film dealt with a young and naive Ethan learning the dark side of espionage, the second film showed Hunt doing battle with an evil?doppelganger?version of himself, and the third picture concerned the now-married spy's horror as his professional life crashed headfirst into his personal life. ?This fourth entry, while fantastically exciting and expertly crafted, basically feels like a Sean Connery or Roger Moore James Bond film, utterly episodic with no real arc for its lead character. ?What little character growth does occur ironically takes place in a surprisingly moving epilogue, but the majority of the film is merely about a group of spies sent to take down a world-threatening baddie as if it was all-in-a-day's work for them.

Noted quibbles aside, Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol is a?splendidly?exciting piece of mainstream entertainment. ?It is a dazzling action picture that genuinely impresses with its feats of daring-do and its overwhelming locations. ?It may not be art, but it is a glorious piece of craft and displays more unadulterated ?showmanship than any Earth-bound action picture of the last decade. ?Paramount and Tom Cruise continue to make this series among the more exciting franchises out there because of their willingness to bring in different and unique directors?for each installment and allowing them to shape a specifically personal vision for each film. ?The gamble on Brad Bird certainly paid off this time around. Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol is simply wonderful entertainment.

Sony serves up US Vita manual two months early, theoretical gamers rejoice

Jealous that Japan has first dibs on Sony's next generation portable? Or maybe you imported a PlayStation Vita, and need a little help navigating the Kanji-laden menus? Either way, Sony has a bone to throw you -- an online Vita user's guide, and in English, to boot. In addition to basic console operations, the online manual details the handheld's major features and apps, including Party, Near, the PS Store, a Photos app, the web browser, remote play and the Vita's video and music apps. The guide also mentions a few limitations, for instance, PSN video downloads will be standard definition only -- if you want to watch something in 720p, you'll need to load it yourself using the Vita's Content Manager. It also confirms the handheld's single account lock-down, noting that even your console's memory card is tied to your PSN account -- it simply won't work on your friend's Vita. Curious about battery life, 3G data usage trackers and remote play restrictions? Hit the source and dive in, you've got two months to study up.
