A University of British Columbia study has found traces of the bacteria listeria in ready-to-eat fish products sold in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

UBC food microbiologist Kevin Allen tested a total of 40 ready-to-eat fish samples prior to their best before date. Purchased from seven large chain stores and 10 small retailers in Metro Vancouver, these products included lox, smoked tuna, candied salmon and fish jerky.

The findings published in a recent issue of the journal Food Microbiology show that listeria was present in 20 per cent of the ready-to-eat fish products. Of these, five per cent had the more virulent variety of listeria monocytogenes.

Allen says although the listeria monocytogenes levels in the ready-to-eat fish products met federal guidelines, the bacteria can multiply during handling and storage particularly toward the end of shelf life.

"Additional handling of ready-to-eat foods in stores, such as slicing, weighing, and packaging, may increase the potential for cross-contamination," says Allen. "While listeria bacteria can be killed by high heat, most people eat these fish products without further cooking."

He adds, "What this means for consumers is that pregnant women, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system should be aware of the health risks."

An assistant professor at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS), Allen led the study with co-authors Lili Mesak, a UBC research assistant, and Jovana Kova?evic, an LFS food science graduate student.

The researchers also tested ready-to-eat meat products from the same Metro Vancouver retailers where they bought the fish. However, they didn't find listeria in any of the 40 meat samples which included bologna, corned beef, cooked ham and pepperoni.

Eating foods spoiled with listeria monocytogenes that exceed federal guidelines of 100 listeria cells per gram can cause illness ranging from diarrhea to vomiting. Listeriosis infection can also result in brain and blood infections and is fatal in an estimated 20-40 per cent of cases.

Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and moon to put on rare spectacle in sky

This past weekend, three planets joined the moon in a rare alignment. On Monday, these celestial bodies will be joined by Mercury.?

A cosmic team-up of planets and the thin crescent moon is dazzling skywatchers around the world this weekend, and the celestial sky show is just getting started.

The planets Venus and Jupiter dominate the western evening sky at sunset on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 25 and 26), with the crescent moon hovering nearby. The planet Mercury joins the cosmic trio briefly just after sunset before slipping below the horizon.

The planet Mars is also making its own appearance in the evening sky, but rises in the east a few hours after sunset in its own solo celestial show.

The?sky maps of Jupiter, Venus and the moon here?show how the bright objects, as well as Mars later, will appear in the night sky.?

"This is a great weekend to watch the sun go down. Venus, Jupiter and the slender crescent moon are lining up in the western sky, forming a bright triangle in the evening twilight," astronomer Tony Phillips of the skywatching website?Spaceweather.com?wrote in an alert. "These three objects are so bright, they shine through thin clouds and even city lights."?[Skywatcher Photos: Jupiter, Venus & the Moon]

Skywatchers have already been amazed at the sight of Jupiter and Venus shining together with the moon this week.

"To see the three brightest objects in the sky form a perfectly straight line in the west was a very beautiful and very powerful sight that I will not forget," skywatcher and nature photographer William Ott told SPACE.com in an email. Ott snapped photos of the planets and moons from a spot just outside Woodstown, N.J.

On Saturday and Sunday, the moon, Venus and Jupiter will appear as a skinny triangle of celestial lights. However, the triangle will have a slightly different configuration on each night.

Tonight, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury will align in a diagonal line (with Jupiter at the top) with the moon appearing just above and at the right of Venus. On Sunday night, the cosmic line-up happens again, but this time the moon will appear higher in the sky, just to the right of Jupiter.

NCAA grants Louisiana-Monroe waiver for 2013 NCAA tournament

A little over a month ago, UConn applied to the NCAA for a waiver of the men's basketball program's APR ban from the 2013 NCAA tournament. The application highlighted UConn's large turnaround in academic performance, outlined steps the school would take to make sure that turnaround continued, and spoke of plans to limit competition and practice in order to create more study time. And then, about two weeks ago the NCAA rejected that waiver application.

Another school with APR problems is the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The Warhawks basketball team was also banned from the 2013 NCAA tournament and like UConn, the school applied for a waiver. In its application ULM outlined its academic turnaround, outlined steps it had taken to make sure the turnaround continued and talked about reduced practice and competition time that would go to academics. And then, today, the NCAA approved ULM's waiver.

There are differences between the Warhawks and the Huskies -- the biggest being that ULM was also banned from this year's NCAA tournament -- but read this paragraph from ULM's release and tell me it doesn't sound exactly like a description of UConn:

Academic improvements during the current academic year, the school's meeting the conditions it set forth during the historical penalty review last year and the men's basketball team not being eligible for postseason competition during the 2011-12 season all contributed to the approval of the waiver. In its approval, the NCAA specifically cited ULM's recently revised academic improvement plan and successful implementation of the plan. ULM's waiver to the NCAA includes limited practice and competition periods and academic support initiatives to offset the lessened time on the court.

Good work NCAA.

Erosional origin of linear dunes on Earth and Saturn's moon Titan

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? Linear dunes, widespread on Earth and Saturn's moon, Titan, are generally considered to have been formed by deposits of windblown sand. It has been speculated for some time that some linear dunes may have formed by "wind-rift" erosion, but this model has commonly been rejected due to lack of sufficient evidence. Now, new research supported by China's NSF and published this week in GSA BULLETIN indicates that erosional origin models should not be ruled out.

The linear dunes in China's Qaidam Basin have been proposed to have formed as self-extending lee dunes under a unidirectional wind regime owing to a high level of total silt, clay, and salt content or cohesiveness of sediments, and they have undergone southward lateral migration at rates of up to 3 m/yr.

New GSA BULLETIN research examines the sediments, internal structures, and optically stimulated luminescence ages of the linear dunes in the central Qaidam Basin approximately 80 km north of the city Golmud. The study's findings suggest that the linear dunes are most likely of erosional origin similar to yardangs with orientations controlled by strikes of joints.

According to the study's lead author, Jianxun Zhou of the China University of Petroleum's State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resource & Prospecting, "If the control of tectonic structures on the orientation of wind-eroded ridges is taken into account, morphodynamic interpretations for the wind-rift model may become much simpler. No one has considered the possibility of erosional origin for the linear dunes on Titan. Nearly all researchers consider the linear dunes on Titan to be of depositional origin, but their morphodynamic interpretations are complicated and their relationships to wind directions are in dispute. If an erosional origin is considered, the morphodynamic interpretations of the linear dunes on Titan can also be greatly simplified."

CONTINUE IMPROVING COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE ...

What All Business Managers Need To Know To
Improve Communication In Their Workplace

In this blog, once again, I want to stress the importance (or rather, the necessity) of opening up a dialogue with ALL employees in any group or business. As I have mentioned many times here, I have been coaching (preaching?) business and executive improvement for over a quarter of a century now. Just recently two questions were asked of me that would indicate this message is still not getting across properly to those that need to practice it.

The first question came from a plant manager who asked me what he and his staff could do to get a better ?feel? of what was actually happening each day out in their factory. The second was from a male department supervisor of 46?(female) garment workers who wanted to develop a closer relationship (camaraderie and kinship were ?his? words) with his employees. I presented them both with pretty much the same response. That is, you have to give every single employee an opportunity to be asked ? and given an honest response ? to this question: ?What can we do to help you do your job (better).?

The bare essence of this question is paramount to ?successful business awareness?. As I have always advocated most business owners, executives, managers, and supervisors DO NOT KNOW all they should know about what is going on in their place of business. My experience has proven that rank-and-file employees usually seem to be the only ones aware of hidden discrepancies, costs, and serious problems ? ?because hardly anyone of real importance ever takes the time to ask them.

You NEED to set up a system of communicating with all employees in order to learn how to make effective, but yet easy-to-implement, improvements. As I suggested to both of these individuals, as well as to hundreds of others, visit http://www.b2bawareness.com and opt in for a free report ?Are You Asking The Right Questions To The Right People??. Many executives and managers have been blown away by the ?simplicity in the logic? asked in these ten questions. I have been told by many of my readers that this report made them want to change the way they managed immediately and asked for my help.

This site provides direct and easy to understand logic for any business to improve, and it should be a must read for anyone who leads people. For every business owner, executive, manager, and supervisor who views this site, I believe they will look forward to going to work the next day. This site offers an e-book entitled ?Successful Business Awareness??,?and any coaching support that may be needed to assure the promises made become reality. It is supported by many testimonials and claims from former and current clients.

If you are a business manager, executive or owner, find out for yourself why communication at work may seem lost ? but now can be found again, with positive and rewarding results.

To learn more about communication in the workplace and ?successful business awareness?, and how its use of ?panorizontal communication? will help you and your company, read what others say @ http://www.b2bawareness.com/testimonials.html and learn for yourself how you too can improve even further as a solid, sound communicator.

Thank you for visiting ? and I wish you nice days always,

Call this ancient rock carving 'little horny man'

A stick figure man with a giant phallus dubbed "the little horny man" by its discoverers is the oldest rock carving found yet in the Americas, researchers say.

These findings might shed new light on when the New World was first settled, scientists added.

The time frame during which humans first reached the Americas remains hotly debated. One key to settling this controversy would involve uncovering early examples of human artifacts, such as art.

Scientists discovered one ancient sample of such art in a cave named Lapa do Santo in central-eastern Brazil. The region is home to Luzia, the oldest human skeleton found to date in South America.

Lapa do Santo is one of the largest rock shelters excavated yet in the region, a limestone cave covering an area of about 14,000 square feet (1,300 square meters). Here, researchers have found buried human remains, tools made of stone and bone, ash from hearths, and leftovers from meals of fruit and small game.

In 2009, digging about 13 feet (4 meters) below the surface, the scientists found a rock carving or petroglyph of a man packed into the side of the cave. The figure, which appears to be squatting with his arms outstretched, is about 12 inches (30 centimeters) tall from head to feet and about 8 inches (20 centimeters) wide.

"We discovered this petroglyph in the final moments of excavation at the site," said researcher Walter Alves Neves, an archaeologist and biological anthropologist at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

The engraving is also depicted with a relatively oversized phallus about 2 inches (5 cm) long, or about as long as the man's left arm.

"We named the figure 'the little horny man,'" Neves said.

"The figure is probably linked to some kind of fertility ritual," Neves told LiveScience.

"There is another site in the same region where you find paintings with men with oversized phalluses, and also pregnant women, and even a parturition (childbirth) scene."

Carbon dating and other tests of the sediment covering the petroglyph suggest the engraving dates between 9,000 and 12,000 years old.

This makes it the oldest reliably dated instance of such rock art found yet in the Americas.

When this carving is compared with other examples of early rock art found in South America, it would seem that abstract forms of thinking may have been very diverse back then, which suggests that humans settled the New World relatively early, giving their art time to diversify.

For instance, at one site in Argentina named Cueva de las Manos, paintings of hands predominate, while at another site there, Cueva Epullan Grande, engravings have geometric motifs.

"It shows that about 11,000 years ago, there was already a very diverse manifestation of rock art in South America, so man probably arrived in the Americas much earlier than normally is accepted," Neves said.

The scientists detailed their findings online Wednesday 22 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Healing Relationships: Save Money with Pro Active Marriage Advice

Here is a link to an eye opening article about the average cost of divorce. One
Forbes writer said the average cost is $20,000 for a contest divorce. According to the article, Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch's divorce cost him $1.7 billion. "The divorces of Michael Jordan, Neil Diamond, Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg each cost more than $100 million, according to Reuters."

Online divorces cost much less. BUT

How about the loss of the other partner's income? Child support? Maybe it is amicable and do it yourself now. But later things can change.

But how do you measure the human cost?

I read a great book about the unanticipated legacy of divorce. The long term study showed that it affects the kids all the way into their adult life.

"We're just living together, you say."

The human costs will be the same. Immeasurable.

Why not try something pro-active? Why not find some strategies to resolve issues now?

Another thing. And please pay careful attention to this. Resentment can ruin not only your relationship with your partner, but also your relationship with your kids, it can ruin your happiness, your health and your spiritual well being.

If nothing else, you absolutely should be concerned, very concerned, if you are resentful, frustrated or angry. You must learn how to let go of these negative emotions.

Five buddy sports

While you can shoot hoops on your own, you certainly can?t beat anyone except your own high score.? Baseball isn?t going to be much fun if you are ready to bat and have no pitcher.? Below are five sports that will just not work without a buddy.? Or if they do, they?ll look plain silly.

1. ?Diving ? Having a dive buddy is imperative to be certified, plus it?s common safety sense.? You can?t dive 90 feet into the open ocean on your own; that?s dumb.? You won?t have help when you run out of air, nobody to warn you that you swam too far from the boat, and nobody to point out that sleeping shark. Throughout your certification process you are taught to work with your dive buddy for hand signals, breathing and rescue techniques.? Don?t dive alone.? PADI wouldn?t like it.

2.??Fencing ? While you can practice in the mirror and perfect your stance, you won?t get very far without practicing with another fencer.? It would look like you were trying to hit a pi?ata, but much less exciting because there?s nobody to cheer you on, and no pi?ata.? If you decide you want to be a fencer, either professionally or for recreation, be sure to find a fencing buddy to join with you.

3. ?Tandem bicycle ? Unless you are 6?7?+, chances are you won?t be able to sit on the back seat of a tandem bicycle and steer from the front.? A bicycle built for two is just that:? for two.? You would look awfully silly pedaling on a tandem bike for a leisurely Saturday morning ride on your own.? Other bikers might think you lost your counterpart.

4.??Tag ? Tag, who?s it?? You can run around in your back yard as much as you want, but what are you going to do, tag the inanimate garden gnome?? I?m sorry, but this game is just not playable without at least two people.? Frozen tag would make for a long afternoon, waiting for someone to set you free.

5.??Tetherball ? I picture a lonely, friendless boy hitting the tetherball back and forth on his own.? Think about it.? Hitting a single ball attached to a string back and forth with himself?all alone?nobody to play with.? Remember the pity you felt for Napoleon Dynamite?? If you ever see someone playing tetherball by themselves, go make a new friend and join in.

What sport or game requires at least one other person? What?s your favorite buddy sport?

Understanding Elder Law : How lawyers Can Be helpful. | Law Firms

Please consult a lawyer in your state for state particular guidance. You could perhaps have even had cash direct drafted by the bank. You might even have a confirmation number from the bank. But the legal company handling the foreclosure doesn't talk with the servicing agents and they allegedly do not read the notes ? so they foreclose anyhow and you haven't got any concept that occurred till you get a letter from a 3rd party customer. Have you definitely made a complaint to the bank? Was it allotted to a wholly owned service associate of the legal company handling the foreclosure? The legal practises handling repos have fouled up so many cases, and I do mean many they're now using their own service company to deal with the volume of call post foreclosure. The term elder law was first coined in the latter 90s to explain any kind of law applying to pensioners and their legal questions. This can include medicare, competency, age discrimination, estate planning, social security, survivors benefits and plenty of other subjects that directly impact on anyone that is past retirement age. If you're over sixty five and have questions about any of these issues , be certain you talk with a lawyer experienced in elder law. The Expansion of Elder Law : Chicago Is Graying Chicagos old population is growing quick just like it is growing through the US. Just about 12% of the people is over age sixty five, and by 2050, there'll be over thirty six million pensioners in the U. S. . Whether you have got an interest in setting up an estate so as to leave something for your youngsters after you die or you believe you've been discriminated against due to your age, you need to talk with an elder law legal proceedings solicitor. She or he can steer you thru each part of planning or action in the courts required. The right legal proceedings solicitor, Chicago based or alternatively, will help you preserve your grace while fighting back against people or groups who have milked you. So the indisputable fact that you had an alteration going with the bank now places you on an even level with the bank on the issue of notice ? you may not have received notice since you were in the middle of an alteration. The notice of lis pendens give the world notice of your title claim, making it troublesome for the 3rd party consumer to get title insurance on their re-sale. Did you think your mortgage? Has the bank been handling you on the loan during the past? Did the legal firm give you notice? Two.

Santorum declares Ohio 'ground zero' in GOP race

(AP) ? Presidential candidate Rick Santorum is raising the stakes in the GOP nomination race in Ohio, declaring the state "ground zero" as he aggressively campaigns for one of Super Tuesday's biggest prizes.

More delegates will be awarded in Ohio than in any other state except Georgia in the opening months of the Republican campaign. Ohio and Georgia are two of the 10 contests scheduled for March 6, a benchmark for the primary campaign that often decides who can continue to the next level.

After three events in Ohio on Friday, Santorum is scheduled to begin Saturday with a tea party rally in Columbus. He then plans to attend a luncheon with the Ohio Christian Alliance and finish his day at a Lincoln Day dinner in Akron.

"There's no state that can shout louder. You are the biggest state. You've got the biggest trove of delegates," Santorum told the Brown County Republican Party on Friday night. "This is ground zero. Ohio."

While 63 delegates are at stake in Ohio, Georgia offers 76.

Hours earlier, the former Pennsylvania senator stood at the State House in Columbus as state Attorney General Mike DeWine formally shifted his allegiance to Santorum from rival Mitt Romney, another sign that Santorum has seized the momentum in the roller coaster Republican presidential contest.

His socially conservative message has captivated crowds this week from Boise, Idaho, to Romney's hometown of Detroit to the southern Ohio village of Georgetown.

"We have a culture that is in need of renewal," Santorum declared inside the Georgetown Elementary School gymnasium. "Big things are at stake. Our family. Our faith."

Questions about whether Santorum can sustain his rise in the polls come amid signs of stress within his campaign, mainly disorganization. Romney's mammoth political machine ? coupled with new scrutiny for Santorum's view of social issues as well as governmental policies ? will give Santorum little margin for error.

As an example, one misstep by a Santorum supporter kept the former senator off message at times for two days.

Foster Friess, the main donor behind Santorum's "super PAC," created a stir Thursday when he related on MSNBC an old joke about how aspirin used to be a method for birth control. "Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraception," Friess said with a grin. "The gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly."

Friess apologized Friday in a blog post. But Santorum was repeatedly forced to distance himself from his surrogate's comments, which Santorum described as "a bad joke." The comments drew unwanted attention to Santorum's own musings about contraception and women's issues.

Santorum has said that he wouldn't try to take away the birth control pill or condoms but that states should be free to ban them. He told a Christian blog last year that as president he would warn the nation about "the dangers of contraception" and the permissive culture spit encourages. He's also questioned whether women should be in combat and said that "radical feminists" have undermined the traditional family by "convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."

Speaking to reporters after the DeWine announcement, Santorum said he and his wife, as Catholics, don't practice birth control.

"To be attacked on that, which I have been, that somehow or another that just because I personally believe this, that somehow now I'm going to be the uber-czar that's going to try to impose that on the rest of the country, it's absurd," he said. "It's absurd on its face, and it's absurd based on my record in the Congress."

The contraception flap, according to Republican observers, is evidence of an undisciplined campaign that is already stumbling under the weight of intensifying scrutiny. Polling suggests that significant numbers of voters still don't know Santorum well. And he may struggle to win over female voters in particular as they begin to pay more attention, according to Phil Musser, a GOP strategist who doesn't work for either campaign.

"I think in the next couple days, we could start to see some serious erosion with respect for female support for Santorum in the Republican primary," he said. "And that is a short-term challenge for him as we head into Michigan and beyond. But secondarily, one of my big questions is, Could he compete aggressively against President Obama if he's upside down on the gender line?"

The Romney campaign countered on another front in a conference call at roughly the same time as Santorum's DeWine announcement. It was the third consecutive day the campaign hosted such a conference call, although each featured Romney supporters from different states.

John Sununu, a former White House chief of staff and a Romney supporter based in New Hampshire, described Santorum as "a candidate who loves spending and frankly supports liberal labor causes and liberal social causes, like giving voting rights to felons."

Santorum, while in the Senate, supported restoring voting rights to felons once they had completed their sentence or parole.

Despite being outspent on the airwaves so far, Santorum leads various recent polls in Michigan and Ohio.

A VoIP Phone System Can Open the Door to a Complete Unified ...

A VoIP phone system is at the heart of a unified communications solution. In today?s fast-paced world, the workforce is more mobile than ever before and being able to reach someone when they are not physically in the office has become a key necessity for many businesses. It?s no longer enough to be able to just pick up the phone and call someone. With the more advanced technology available today, people are communicating via IM, cell phones, video conferencing and texting. Unified communications allows for the use of any one of these technologies to reach someone regardless of their location.

As an example, if your salesperson needs to confer with the technical specialist to answer customers? questions, the technical specialist can be conferenced in via web chat, video conferencing, or a conference call by simply clicking a button on the computer screen. The system already knows where that person is located and what would be the most efficient way of reaching them. This eliminates the salesperson from having to make multiple phone calls or waiting for responses to e-mails.

Since e-mail is no longer the preferred way of getting a quick response, instant messaging has taken its place in the workplace. Many e-mails are often more background chatter than they are significant correspondence. Because of the delay involved when waiting for a response to an e-mail, other methods of communication are more efficient and provide quicker turnaround. When staff needs an answer right away or needs to communicate one-on-one, instant messaging is a preferred method of communication. With unified communications, instant messaging can occur between a computer and a cell phone as well as computer to computer. This eliminates the user?s current location as a hindrance to fast communication.

For voice calling, if the intended party can only be reached by phone, the person trying to reach them is notified when they click on the icon. The system then automatically connects the call, allowing the conversation to proceed. Depending on how the VoIP phone system is configured, the call can either be forwarded to the cell phone or to an actual extension on the phone system itself. Either way, the caller is immediately connected to the intended party without having to determine where they are at and the appropriate form of communication needed.

Video conferencing is gaining in popularity and a VoIP phone system is making it easier to achieve. This combined with SIP technology, allows all types of communication to become integrated and operate seamlessly on the same network. This allows the you to take advantage of many different forms of messaging and communicating, all under one umbrella. Users can access any form of messaging through one interface. There?s no accessing different systems to use different applications. IM, texting, video conferencing, and voice calls all have one point of entry. This simplified approach is easy for non-technical people to understand and use. When people are doing their day to day jobs, they simply need the technology to work. Frustration on the part of the users can mean that your expensive telecommunications solution is not being used to its full potential.

This new streamlined approach organizes all the mediums with which your company communicates and makes things simpler for staff and clients alike. Having flexibility in the way that your employees can reach each other means that processes are improved in both speed and efficiency because the delay in reaching someone has been eliminated or minimized. If you?ve ever had an important decision riding on the input of someone who?s not available, you know that being able to reach someone more quickly is key to landing that big client or making that large sale.

Security is improved because all forms of communication fall under the same security technology. In the past, each form of communication required its own security to insure that messages and conversations were kept private and did not fall into the wrong hands. Once communication is unified, they all fall under the same security solution. This makes the process of keeping conversations, whether in text or audio format, safe from hackers and thieves without implementing multiple security strategies.

The best way to implement a unified communication solution is to make an assessment of how your company currently communicates and which features are in highest demand. Many business owners make the mistake of purchasing technology that the company does not use or understand. Features can always be added on later in the event that the need for the additional technology should arise.

If you have a work force on the go, then a unified communications solution can streamline the way you do business while helping to keep costs down. Careful analysis and a VoIP phone system can give you a complete package that will keep your company in touch and moving forward.

Ruth Eglash: Taking the Humor Out of the "Shit People Say... "

It is true that every fad has a natural life span and, of course, in this day and age the shelf life of a joke is even shorter than it used to be. However, what is really "shit" is when certain people purposely destroy the humor, twisting it in such a sick way that their overall message falls totally flat.

Over the last few months, a spate of video clips entitled "Shit Girls Say," featuring Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis, have gently poked fun at the stupid things people say and do.

At first the phenomenon, which even has its own YouTube channel and Twitter feed (@shitgirlssay) highlighted dumb comments young girls make to their friends and about the world at large.

The hilarious concept quickly went viral with people making their own spoofs and posting them on YouTube.

Some clips were funnier than others -- Shit White Girls Say to Arab Girls or Shit Girls Say to Gay Guys -- but all were a light-hearted commentary on the stereotypes we harbor and how we often treat each other. It's fun, funny and, in a positive way, might even make a person think twice about how they view the world and the other people in it.

What has also been brilliant about these series of viral videos is that different ethnic, religious and cultural groups have found a place to poke fun at themselves, showing that almost everyone, at least on some level, can find their humorous, approachable side: check out comedian Amer Zahr's Shit Palestinians Say or Shit Indian Girls Say.

I say almost, however because sadly there are always a few people that say really shitty things. Ironically, in this case, it is those who claim to be "rights activists" fighting for a humanitarian cause.

Shit Zionists Say, (does not deserve a link) is a clip made by a group calling itself "Existence is Resistance." Disturbingly, they have turned a creative and entertaining genre into a very unfunny and failed attempt to make an extreme political point about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Their video does not feature one single Zionist, but a stream of anti-Zionist individuals expounding deep hatred in sick and very unconstructive way.

While the video is highly offensive, it also does nothing to promote the very real and serious need for Israelis to recognize the rights of Palestinian people as human beings and the need for everyone in the region to work towards peace.

Sadly, this group has not only discredited the cause it supposedly supports but it has also destroyed the spirit of this light-hearted and humorous genre, possibly bringing this fun fad to an abrupt end.

Late-night poll: Do you use a third party app store?

Android Central

For a lot of people, the ability to install apps that aren't offered in the "official" Android Market is a big draw.  Android devices (for the most part) allows applications to be installed from any source, which has led to alternative marketplaces full of apps.  For the most part, they are all well done and offer a safe and convenient experience, but often lack in selection compared to Google's Market.  There's plenty of reasons people turn to places like Amazon and SlideME, and I wander and sample from markets other than Google's myself.

This got me wondering -- how many of you guys do the same?  I'm betting a good many of us do it, especially at least once a day at Amazon for the free app.  Let us know in the poll!

White House threatens veto of GOP's highway bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? After years of procrastination, the White House and Congress have suddenly boosted a long-term plan to improve the nation's roads, bridges and transit systems to the top of the political agenda.

This week, the House and Senate are set to take up vastly different bills providing a blueprint for shoring up the nation's aging transportation system. Lawmakers are driven in part by a desire to show voters a major accomplishment in an election year when regard for Congress is at rock bottom. They are pitching the bills as jobs generators, although it may be more accurate to say they preserve jobs that might otherwise be lost if Congress doesn't find a way to keep highway and transit programs solvent.

President Barack Obama chimed in Monday with his own plan to spend nearly half a trillion dollars over six years on transportation infrastructure. And on Tuesday the White House threatened to veto the House bill, saying the Republican measure doesn't spend enough to strengthen the nation's transportation system and weakens environmental and labor standards.

But the president's plan is much grander than anything Congress is likely to go along with that the administration has swung its weight behind the Senate bill, a bipartisan plan that more modestly proposes to spend $109 billion over less than two years.

House Republicans have proposed spending about $260 billion over nearly five years, but the bill is drawing fire from so many quarters that the ability of Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to muscle the measure through to passage is in doubt. To build support with tight-fisted tea partiers for such a large spending bill, GOP leaders added sweeteners designed to appeal to conservatives, such as expanded offshore oil and gas drilling, approval of the controversial Keystone pipeline and a requirement that federal employees pay more toward their pensions.

The bill's treatment of mass transit programs has riled urban lawmakers, including New York and Chicago metro-area Republicans who may wind up voting against the bill. It eliminates the guarantee of a portion of federal gasoline and diesel tax revenues for transit, leaving programs vulnerable to future budget cuts.

"If you are a Republican from a city that has mass transit, how can you vote for this and go home?" said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., who is sponsoring an amendment to restore a portion of fuel tax revenues for transit. Seven Republicans have co-sponsored the amendment.

And six GOP lawmakers have sent a letter to Boehner and other GOP leaders saying the transportation bill will stand a better chance of passage if provisions opening leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling are dropped. The provisions, which include opening the East and West coasts and portions of the Florida Gulf Coast, as well as ANWR, to drilling, are supposed to help pay for transportation programs. But the Congressional Budget Office estimates they would raise less than $5 billion over 10 years for the federal government.

"Opening ANWR to drilling as a means to pay for the transportation bill is neither reasonable nor realistic," said Rep. Charles Bass, R-N.H., author of the letter.

The bill also eliminates locally popular federal programs that help underwrite bike paths, bike lanes and pedestrian safety projects, including the Safe Routes to School program, in order to concentrate funding on highways.

"The House bill takes us back to the dark ages," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Republican congressman, told reporters Monday. He said he doesn't expect any Democrats to vote for the bill.

"I hope there will be lots of opportunities to amend it," LaHood said, to increase funding for transit and other needs. "Without amendments, this bill isn't going to pass."

But Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and co-author of a major portion of the bill, said he is "fairly confident" based on his discussions with GOP lawmakers that the bill can pass.

"This is going to be the No. 1 job creator and economic generator bill of this entire session (of Congress)," he said. "I think members will rally behind what may be their last chance of getting jobs and a responsible blueprint for dealing with our crumbling infrastructure."

There will be changes made to the bill through a leadership-backed amendment that will address GOP members' concerns, Mica said.

"The bill isn't done," he said. "The final bill will be something conservatives can be very proud of because it has dramatic reforms and measures that people have called for for years."

But House leaders are being squeezed from both sides. If they give too much ground they risk losing support on the right. The Club for Growth, a free-market, anti-tax group influential with fiscal conservatives, and the political arm of the conservative Heritage Foundation have objected to both the House and the Senate bills. Conservatives say the bills spend too much money and transportation programs should be paid for using only fuel tax revenue. Democrats and moderate Republicans, meanwhile, oppose sharp cuts to popular programs.

In the White House veto threat, Obama's Office of Management and Budget also objected to a mandate in the House bill that a permit be granted for an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. The Obama administration denied the permit last month but left the door open for an application for a new pipeline route. The White House says the bill also eliminates transit programs that help metropolitan areas reduce congestion.

GOP leaders said Tuesday they intend to divide the transportation bill into three bills. Their strategy is to allow lawmakers who oppose the transit changes or oil drilling provisions to vote again those portions, while still supporting the heart of the bill. Afterward, the House clerk will stitch the three bills together.

Floor debate could begin on the House bill as soon as Wednesday, with a final vote expected Friday. Lawmakers had filed 293 amendment requests with the House Rules Committee by Monday's 11 a.m. deadline. The committee decides which amendments can be offered during debate.

Debate began on the Senate bill late last week with a strongly bipartisan procedural vote of 85-11, and is continuing this week. The bill is co-authored by Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., ideological opposites who have managed to overcome substantial disagreement in an effort to pass a bill.

But Democrats, who control the Senate, have struggled to come up with the money to pay for the plan. Several GOP senators have signaled that their support for the bill could turn to opposition if changes aren't made to satisfy their fiscal concerns.

Like the House, the Senate has been hampered by a shortfall between current spending levels and fuel tax revenues, which are the main source of funding for transportation programs. Reductions in driving due to the economy as well as more fuel-efficient vehicles have lowered tax revenues. The budget office projects the trust fund that pays for highway and transit programs will go broke sometime in the 2013 federal budget year.

Without an infusion of cash from somewhere, the Transportation Department could be forced to slow down reimbursements to states for highway construction and other transportation projects. That, in turn, could lead to thousands of lost jobs.

Lawmakers could resolve much of their money woes by increasing the 18.4 cent-a-gallon gas tax and the 24.4 cent-a-gallon diesel tax, but that's politically unpalatable in an economy where unemployment remains high and many Americans feel financially insecure.

Indecision about how to shore up the Highway Trust Fund has long stymied efforts to pass a transportation plan. The last long-term plan expired in 2009. Congress has kept programs going through a series of eight short-term extensions. The current extension expires March 31.
