Italy takes early lead in women's gym qualifying
LONDON (AP) ? Italy leads after the early qualifying sessions in women's gymnastics, though it is sure to be a brief stay atop the standings with the United States, Russia, Romania and China still to come.
The Italians finished Sunday with 168.397 points, more than 1.5 points ahead of Australia. Brazil is third.
The top eight teams make Tuesday's final.
In the individual standings, 2006 world champion Vanessa Ferrari has the best score.

LONDON (AP) ? It's difficult enough to beat the U.S. women's gymnastics team these days. Now, the rest of the world will have to try and do it after the Americans are given a head start.
The reigning world champions and heavy gold-medal favorites will begin Sunday's team qualification on vault, their strongest event, where a busted big toe won't keep McKayla Maroney from doing her thing.
The 16-year-old will anchor the U.S. on their signature event despite aggravating a toe injury in practice during the run-up to the games.
"Vault is what I'm here for," Maroney said. "I knew I was going to do vault no matter what."
And nobody in the world does the difficult Amanar better than the dynamo from Long Beach, Calif., who rocketed to a world title in Tokyo last fall while helping the U.S. win the championship by a whopping four points.
The same is expected in London, where the U.S. will attempt to capture Olympic gold for the first time since the "Magnificent Seven" triumphed in Atlanta 16 years ago.
World all-around champion Jordyn Wieber, trials winner Gabby Douglas and team captain Aly Raisman will do all four events for the U.S., with Kyla Ross replacing Maroney on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
By the time Maroney's day is over, the U.S. could have a pretty healthy lead. Vault produces the highest scores in competition, and no other country can match the U.S. Amanar for Amanar.
The vault ? named after 1996 vault champion Simona Amanar ? is arguably the most difficult being done in competition and is worth an extra 0.7 just for even attempting it. If the U.S. gets them off cleanly, they'll put the rest of the 12-team field in a hole that will be tough to overcome.
As if sending a message of their dominance, the U.S. ripped off a series of Amanars during podium training, resembling a pink-clad assembly line.
Barring catastrophe akin to a reverse "Miracle On Ice," the U.S. will be one of the eight teams to advance to Tuesday night's finals.
Each team enters four athletes per event during qualifying, with the three best scores counting.
The top eight teams at the end of the night make the finals on Tuesday, which moves to the "three-up, three-count" format.
The stiffest test for the U.S. is expected to come from defending Olympic champion China, Russia and a resurgent Romanian squad that won the European championships handily this spring.
Still, there's little doubt the U.S. is the team to catch, particularly with Maroney in the lineup.
Eyebrows were raised just before the games when she was held out for much of training, spending time behind a small protective wall with her feet hidden from view.
Turns out she'd accidentally kicked a beam during practice shortly after the U.S. arrived in London, causing her big toe, which she broke at a competition in Chicago in May, to start throbbing again.
The only real treatment is time off. She won't get any until after the games and will grit her way through the vault with her big toe and second toe taped together.
After she's done with her two trips down the runway, Maroney will get a close-up view of the budding rivalry between Wieber and Douglas.
Wieber has steamrolled the competition for the past three years but was upended by the sprightly Douglas at trials. Both have stressed they're focused on the team gold, but the qualification round will mark the start of what could be a gripping week in which the U.S. tries to repeat the 1-2 all-around finish produced four years ago by Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson.
If Douglas or Wieber falters, Raisman is more than capable of bumping one out of the all-around. The top 24 individual finishers move on to the finals Thursday, but Olympic rules allow only two athletes from any country to advance, meaning at least one of the three Americans will watch from the stands in a sweatsuit.
It's that kind of depth that has made the U.S. a prohibitive favorite. Wieber, Douglas, Maroney and Raisman were all part of the world championship team that crushed the field in Tokyo. The 15-year-old Ross has fit right in, her elegant lines a marked contrast in style to some of her more muscled teammates.
Ross has hardly been intimidated by the stage, soaring at trials last month to finish second on bars behind Douglas. She was sharp in training on Friday, earning praise from team coordinator Martha Karolyi after a series of no-wobble beam routines.
A repeat performance Sunday should set the stage for the biggest night in U.S. gymnastics this millennium.

Stepchildren can add financial and emotional complications to a relationship, especially for the stepparent. These obligations may not end when the stepchild turns 18, as more of today?s parents are pie graph or charting their children into adulthood. More than 4 in 10 American adults have a stepparent, a step or half sibling or a stepchild, according to the Pew Research Center, and the 2000 U.S. Census showed 4.4 million stepchildren in the country. For someone starting or already in a relationship with a partner who has children, questions about finances become even more complicated. ?It?s absolutely important if you are dating someone who has children or if you have children, you have to bring up the topic of money,? advises Suzanna de Baca, vice president of wealth strategies at Ameriprise Financial. After a while, issues like who pays for a child when eating out or on vacation, which typically isn?t outlined in a divorce decree, can become an issue if the couple doesn?t discuss finances. ?Divorce decrees lay things out in a general sense, but how that plays out in reality could be different,? she says. When couples decide to marry, experts agree that conversations about finances should take top priority?even more so when children are involved. When one person has children from a prior relationship, ?define whether the children are part of the whole financial mix,? says de Baca. ?If you marry someone with children, it?s absolutely a financial responsibility you?re taking on.? Understand the financial picture before getting married. ?People will inevitably argue about money,? says Paul Golden, manager of marketing and communications at the National Endowment for Financial Education. ?Getting married intensifies this especially when there are children.? To help ease any tension, Golden recommends being open and honest about financial situations, credit history, accounts, debts, assets, retirement funds, and any financial obligations from a previous relationship that may include alimony and child pie graph or chart. ?Don?t be shy, especially if your partner has children,? he adds. Be sure to ask any questions about a partner?s child pie graph or chart and alimony payments. ?It?s better to know ahead of time all the possibilities than to find out afterwards,? says Randy Kessler, founding partner of Kessler & Solomiany, LLC. If there are outstanding questions, he suggests talking to a divorce lawyer for an hour to help understand a partner?s financial responsibilities towards children and a former spouse and if there are any financial obligations that you may incur as a result of getting married. ?Stepparents do not have an obligation to pay child pie graph or chart except in extreme circumstances like custody changes where the stepparent becomes a virtual parent who takes on the obligations of a parent and then later becomes only a visiting parent, for example,? Kessler adds. ?If the stepparent adopts the child, they could be obligated to pay child pie graph or chart if the marriage doesn?t work out. As a child cannot be a party to a prenuptial agreement, you cannot establish child pie graph or chart in a prenuptial agreement.? Know your limits. ?You have to talk about where the line is and what you?re comfortable doing,? says certified financial planner Deana Arnett. ?There are some people who have a tough time financially committing to children who aren?t their own.? For example, if your partner loses their job and can?t make child pie graph or chart payments, you can pay their child pie graph or chart or let their ex take them to court for not making payments. ?Are you going to bail your partner out?? she says. ?Child pie graph or chart is a court order,? says Kessler. ?If someone doesn?t pay, they can be sent to jail or forced to pay their ex?s attorney fees. If the judge sends the parent to jail, that parent will be in jail until they pay or the judge becomes convinced they can?t pay.? Although a judge can?t make a stepparent pay child pie graph or chart, ?they can pressure the parent to pay,? says Kessler. Communicate. ?Set regular meetings for financial discussions. These conversations aren?t necessary if you?ve been dating for a few months but once your lives become intertwined?and absolutely before getting married?experts recommend talking about money and household budgets. ?Bring up issues so you?re clear about your feelings about money,? says de Baca. ?Have a mutual plan to give some sort of framework on a go-forward basis.? If your partner divorced because of issues surrounding money, they have to be mature and talk about these topics for the sake of their children. ?If you really can?t talk about money, a mediator might be helpful to facilitate a conversation between your partner and their ex,? says McNeill. ?Then, talk to your stepchildren about what you?re going to do. If you can?t afford something, don?t be afraid to say, ?No, we don?t have the financial resources.?? Oftentimes, children will ask their parent?s significant other for money or to take them shopping. It?s important to talk about this with your partner, asking something like, ?Your child asked me for this, how do you want me to handle this?? de Baca recommends. ? Set boundaries. ?Know your limits with what you?re willing to spend on stepchildren,? says McNeill. ?Be clear and talk about it because this issue can get very touchy. State your boundaries so you don?t become resentful.? If you don?t want to spend retirement assets on a child?s education, for example, then make that clear. ?Retirement savings are separate but the retirement plans are a joint plan, and say that these are our retirement moneys together,? says McNeill. Saying ?no? can be very difficult, and the conversation can get very touchy and emotional at times. To help ease emotions, McNeill suggests beginning a conversation with, ?My intention at the end of this conversation is that love be present.? Create a financial plan. ?Having a real financial plan is very important when looking at what you can and can?t afford,? says de Baca. ?Sometimes you have to pull back and look at what you can afford.? Budgets can also get more complicated when it involves an ex, making planning even more important.? ?When you deal with stepfamily finances, not only are you dealing with your own finances but you?re dealing with the finances to a degree of the ex?s house as well,? says Arnett. ?There?s some financial intertwining from child pie graph or chart payments to dance classes to braces.? Conversations with a partner?s ex-spouse can help you understand where money should come from for certain purchases. ?If you?ve thought about these issues in advance, it takes some of the reaction out of making financial decisions,? says de Baca. As people may have different values towards money, some parents may not foot their financial obligations towards their child. ?Decide whether you want to compensate for the other parent if they don?t have the same resources or aren?t responsible with money,? says McNeill. If you decide not to pay for the portion that a parent doesn?t pay, help create a plan for your stepchild to fund this other half by working or borrowing money. ?Help them think through it,? McNeill says. ?You?ll do them a real service because they?ll have to deal with these decisions later in life and you?ll set clear boundaries for yourself.? ? Print ? Email ? Share ? LONDON?On day three of his overseas tour, Mitt Romney woke up to unfriendly headlines from the British media, who continue to trash him for telling NBC News that he found preparations for the Olympics here "disconcerting."
"Mitt the Twit," declared The Sun tabloid, trashing Romney as a "wannabe president."
The Independent headlined their take on Romney's trip, "Romneyshambles"?accusing him of not only committing a diplomatic gaffe but later "the cardinal sin of U.S. politics, flip-flopping" on his criticism.
The Daily Telegraph suggested Romney's "Olympic gaffe" had overshadowed his trip to London.
Meanwhile, the conservative Daily Mail slammed Romney as "devoid of charm, offensive and a wazzock."
Romney's comments led newscasts on both Sky News and the BBC on Thursday night and early Friday morning, just hours ahead of the Olympic opening ceremonies here.
"Is this guy really prepared to be president?" one Sky News reporter asked in his Thursday night report about Romney's day in London. The reporter trashed the GOP candidate's comments as "just daft."
Romney has repeatedly tried to dial back on his criticism, first in a news conference Thursday outside 10 Downing Street, where he had met with British Prime Minister David Cameron?who had been publicly critical of Romney's remarks earlier in the day.

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan Thursday night, Romney again tried to contain the controversy, telling the CNN host he believes the London games will be successful.

I mean I've done the same thing everybody else did. I watched the games on TV. But to actually be here and to experience not just the athletes but also the volunteers who are working hard and excited, and then the whole community comes together? It's fabulous."
Citing the "enthusiasm" of the people in London, Romney added, "I think you are going to see terrific games that will be long time in our memories."

Oil up fourth day as stimulus hopes support
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil prices rose a fourth day on Friday on hopes for more stimulus from the U.S. Federal Reserve after data showed U.S. economic growth slowed in the second quarter as expected.
Dollar-denominated crude futures saw choppy trading as the euro and dollar <.dxy> also seesawed, buffeted by comments from European leaders.
The euro hit a three-week high, lifted early after French leader Francois Hollande and his German counterpart, Angela Merkel, said they are determined to do all they can to safeguard the single currency.
The euro hit the session high on a report that European Central Bank President Mario Draghi would favor giving the bailout fund a banking license and would meet with German's Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann.
"Financial markets see a benign mix of gently rising risk appetite as worries over an imminent euro zone disaster ease and prospects for another U.S. stimulus increase," said Carsten Fritsch, oil analyst at Commerzbank in Frankfurt.
Brent September crude rose $1.21 to settle at $106.47 a barrel, posting a 36-cent loss for the week after four straight weekly gains. The premium to October Brent stayed above $1 a barrel.
U.S. September crude gained 74 cents to settle at $90.13 a barrel, ending with a 1.43 percent weekly loss after gaining the previous two weeks.
But both contracts stayed on track to register healthy monthly gains next week, after both Brent and U.S. crude suffered double-digit tumbles in the second quarter.
Total Brent crude trading volume lagged the 30-day average by 33 percent and U.S. turnover trailed its 30-day average by 28 percent, with less than an hour of post-settlement trading left.
U.S. RBOB gasoline futures jumped 7.40 cents and heating oil rose 2.10 cents, ahead of front-month August contract expirations on Tuesday.
"RBOB futures ... were supported by a Midwest refinery snag and by the usual speculative short covering that often precedes monthly contract expiration," Jim Ritterbusch, president at Ritterbusch & Associates said in a note.
Money managers raised their net long U.S. crude futures and options positions in the week to July 24, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said on Friday.
They boosted their net long RBOB gasoline positions, while heating oil moved from net short to net long.

U.S. stocks advanced, with the S&P 500 reaching the highest level since May 4, when equities fell sharply on disappointing U.S. April jobs numbers. <.n/>

The speakerphone is pretty weak, both for calls and alert sounds; I barely heard the alarm when I tested it, and it was set to maximum volume. ?After hearing about a horrible puppy massacre on the banks of the San Jacinto river near Houston, I went to investigate,? explains volunteer Rhonda Heffernan. ?Upon arriving I found the bodies of five tortured terrier/ chihuahaua mix puppies. Other terrified dogs were hiding in the woods.?
Though the local media is beginning to take an interest in what?s going on here, no one culprit has been identified. And worse yet, it?s suspected that there may be several.
?We have found dogs decapitated, hit by cars, shot with pellet guns and regular guns, dismembered and we have eye witness reports of people running dogs over with 4-wheelers,? Rhonda says with absolute heartbreak. ?With the help of a few dedicated volunteers, we have rescued 45 dogs from the two dump sites, but official help is still needed.?
The goals of this volunteer group are to:
- stop the abandonment with the help of law enforcment and public awareness campaigns
- rescue any other unfortunate souls, both dogs and cats, that end up at these dump areas
- establish an educational effort in the area
With very limited resources, Stop Crosby Puppy Massacres (Facebook group here) has placed a billboard near the dumping area and have also had a spay/neuter day with the help of SNAP Houston. Today they need financial help and are eager to accept any animal rescue/advocacy group support from?elsewhere in the country.
They?ve turned to the Harmony Fund for help in raising funds to cover the costs of several recently abandoned dogs. Veterinary care is usually quite substantial and includes treatment for an array of injuries as well as common afflictions such as heartworm and mange. Satellites show ice melt across most of Greenland

About 40 percent of Greenland's ice sheet thawed at or near the surface on July 8. Four days later, the melt had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed.

Three satellites found that 97 percent of Greenland -- the land mass second only to Antarctica for its volume of ice -- underwent a thaw never before seen in 33 years of satellite tracking, NASA reported Tuesday.
Satellite experts at first didn't trust their readings, especially since they showed an incredible acceleration. Over four days,?Greenland's ice sheet -- which covers 683,000 square miles --?went from 40 percent in thaw to nearly entirely in thaw.
"This was so extraordinary that at first I?questioned the result: Was this real or was it due to a data error?" Son Nghiem of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., said in NASA's statement about the findings.
Scientists on the ground in Greenland had been reporting an unusually warm summer thaw, including damage at a snow airfield and strong runoff threatening a bridge,?Tom Wagner, who manages NASA's ice research programs, told NBC News.
Ice cores from Greenland's highest region do reveal that such island-wide thaws have happened every 150 years or so, at least over the last few thousand years, but the fear now is that it might occur much more frequently due to warming sea and air temperatures.
"We can't lose sight of the fact that Greenland's ice sheet is losing 150 gigatons of ice a year," Wagner said. That translates into raising sea levels by one-one?hundredth?of an inch. Additionally, the danger of greater warming and greater melt persists.?
"If we continue to observe melting events like?this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome," said?Lora Koenig, a NASA?glaciologist who helped analyze the?satellite data.
The director of the top ice research center in the U.S. said the discovery fits into "the larger picture of a strongly warming Arctic."
A large glacier, twice the size of Manhattan, split off on July 16. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
"Arctic sea ice extent this summer is so far tracking at very low, near record levels, and the ice cover is unusually?diffuse," Mark Serreze of the National Snow and Ice Data Center told NBC News.
On top of that, he said, the seasonal melt that followed the 2012 winter "started unusually early over most of the?Arctic Ocean."
The center's latest report, issued Tuesday, noted that"?Arctic sea ice continued to track at levels far below average through the middle of July, with open water in the Kara and Barents seas reaching as far north as typically seen during September."
Thomas Mote, a University of Georgia climatologist who looked at the satellite data, said the melt followed an unusual series of warm air ridges over Greenland since late May, with the strongest coinciding with the rapid thaw in mid-July.
Each successive ridge, Mote told NBC News, was "stronger than the previous one" and it looks like the pattern has finally broken down.?
The ridges happened just as a cyclical weather phase known as the North Atlantic Oscillation shifted. "Together, they produced near perfect conditions for this event," Mote added.

Because they hold so much ice on land, Greenland and Antarctica have the potential to raise sea levels significantly if warming continues or worsens.?
Sea levels have already risen by about 8 inches in the last century, partly due to some ice melt but also thermal expansion caused by warming seas.
The U.N. climate panel estimates sea level could rise between 7 inches and nearly two feet this century -- the latter a scenario that could prove catastrophic for many coastal areas around the globe.
NASA said researchers had not yet determined whether this summer's Greenland thaw would be significant enough to raise sea levels.
Greenland has enough ice to raise sea levels by 23 feet if it all melted off.
A recent study found that it could take a long-term increase in global temperatures of just 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit to completely melt Greenland's ice sheet in 2,000 years.?
