5 car bombs kill 26 in Shiite areas across Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Five car bombs exploded Monday in predominantly Shiite cities and districts in central and southern Iraq, killing 26 civilians and wounding dozens, officials said.

The blasts come amid a week-long spike in sectarian violence following clashes at a Sunni protest camp in the north of the country. No one has claimed responsibility, but coordinated bombings in civilian areas are a favorite strategy used by al-Qaida in Iraq.

Two parked car bombs went off simultaneously Monday morning in the city of Amarah near a gathering of construction workers and a market, killing 13 civilians and wounding 42, according to police.

Another police officer said a parked car bomb exploded near a restaurant in the city of Diwaniyah, killing eight civilians and wounding 25 others. At least three cars were seen charred and twisted outside a two-story building with a blast-damaged facade. Shop owners and cleaners were brushing debris off the bloodstained pavement.

Amarah, some 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad and Diwaniyah, 30 kilometers (80 miles) south of the capital, are heavily Shiite and normally comparatively peaceful.

Hours later, another parked car bomb went off in the Shiite city of Karbala, killing two civilians and wounding 12 others, police said. Two early Islamic figures revered by Shiites are buried in the city, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of Baghdad.

A parked car bomb ripped through a Shiite neighborhood in the otherwise predominantly Sunni town of Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad, killing three and wounding 16, another police said.

Four medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Sectarian violence has spiked since Tuesday, when security forces tried to make arrests at a Sunni Muslim protest camp in the northern city of Hawija. The move set off a clash that killed 23 people, including three soldiers.

The Hawija incident and a spate of follow-up battles between gunmen and security forces as well as other attacks, including Monday's, have left around 200 dead in the last week.

Two police officers shot as Italian government sworn in

ROME (Reuters) - Two police officers were shot and wounded outside the Italian prime minister's office on Sunday as Enrico Letta's new government was being sworn in around a km (mile) away at the president's palace, RAI state television reported. One man was arrested at the scene of the shooting, a witness said, and it was initially unclear whether the attack was linked to the launch of the new government.

Analysis: Israeli credibility on line over Iran nuclear challenge

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel risks a loss of credibility over both its "red line" for Iran's nuclear program and its threat of military action, and its room for unilateral maneuver is shrinking. After years of veiled warnings that Israel might strike the Islamic Republic, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid out an ultimatum at the United Nations last September.

Hope for survivors fades as Bangladesh building toll reaches 363

DHAKA (Reuters) - Hope for survivors under the rubble of a building that collapsed outside the capital of Bangladesh faded on Sunday, and with more than 900 people still counted as missing fears grew that the death toll could rise far beyond the latest figure of 363. Four people were pulled alive from the wreckage of the Rana Plaza, which housed several factories making low-cost garments for Western retailers, four days after the country's worst-ever industrial accident.

Gunmen surround Libyan foreign ministry to push demands

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Gunmen surrounded Libya's foreign ministry on Sunday to push demands that officials who had worked for deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi's government be banned from senior positions in the new administration. At least 20 pick-up trucks loaded with anti-aircraft guns blocked the roads while men armed with AK-47s and sniper rifles directed the traffic away from the building, witnesses said.

Algeria president in France for tests after minor stroke

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was transferred to France for medical tests on Saturday night after suffering a minor stroke, Algeria's official news agency said. Bouteflika, who has ruled over the North African oil and gas producer for more than a decade, had an "transient ischemic attack" or mini-stroke on Saturday but his condition was not serious, the APS agency said, quoting the prime minister.

Japan's Abe says "restoration of sovereignty day" signals hope

TOKYO (Reuters) - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on Sunday for a renewal of a "sense of hope and determination" in marking for the first time the restoration of Japan's post-war sovereignty, part of a drive to repair what conservatives consider dented national pride. Abe, who is riding a wave of popularity after being swept back into office in a landslide election last December, wants to revise the post-war, U.S.-drafted pacifist constitution and rewrite Japan's wartime history with a less apologetic tone.

France's foreign firepower threatened by budget cuts

CANJUERS ARMY BASE, DRAGUIGNAN, France (Reuters) - Explosions echo through a valley in southern France, sending up plumes of smoke as four Caesar self-propelled guns fire at distant targets in drills that mirror operations in Mali. It's a show of firepower organized by arms manufacturer Nexter to demonstrate the guns to the press and which underlines the role of the army in a conflict that has bolstered France's standing as a nation that can project military force. Yet the message may fall on deaf ears in Paris.

Europe austerity debate to test periphery political will

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Readers of Ireland's largest-selling daily newspaper were confronted by an unexpected front page headline this week when the Irish Independent proclaimed the "End Of Austerity." In a country that began cutting spending and hiking taxes almost five years ago, well before the scale of the euro zone's debt crisis was evident, weary Irish voters have more interest than most in the fresh debate over Europe's cornerstone policy.

One year on, France's Hollande says will weather poll slump

PARIS (Reuters) - France's Francois Hollande said he was undeterred by a first year in power marked by economic slowdown and a record slump in his personal popularity, arguing his 5-year presidency would achieve results over time. In comments to correspondents from Reuters and Agence France Presse a week before the anniversary of his May 2012 election win over Nicolas Sarkozy, Hollande shrugged off polls showing his popularity rating around 25 percent, after the sharpest fall for any president in over half a century.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 drops original TecTile support, requires new TecTile 2

Samsung Galaxy S 4 drops original TecTile support, requires new TecTile 2

Don't get too attached to that collection of TecTiles if you're upgrading to a Galaxy S 4. AnandTech has discovered that Samsung's newer phone includes an NFC chipset that can't read the older TecTiles, which rely on a less common tag type to register our taps instead of the NFC Forum's standards. Customers aren't being left in a bind, however. Samsung has confirmed that it's about to release a follow-up, TecTile 2, which adheres to the official format while supporting the company's older NFC-equipped phones. The fully modernized tags will be ready sometime in the "coming weeks." That doesn't offer much immediate relief for GS3-to-GS4 upgraders whose TecTile layouts have suddenly been reduced to decorations, but those buyers should at least get the replacements they seek before long.

The Top 5 Coolest Places To Run You Have Never Heard Of {Eric ...

Today?s post is a guest entry from Eric Orton, author of the new book The Cool Impossible, hitting shelves May 7th.

The Top 5 Coolest Places To Run You Have Never Heard Of,

by Eric Orton

People run for all reasons, ranging from purely fitness, to racing, to adventure experiences, and travel.? I am fortunate enough to live near epic, world-class mountain running in the Tetons of Jackson Hole.? The great thing about living here is the access I have to these mountains. ?I also have the opportunity to travel to many great places to run and many of the adventures that stick out in my mind are the ones that flew under the radar and were not expected.? Places that might get over shadowed or destinations you might never heard of to run. ?So lets have a look at some of the coolest running destinations that might be worthy of your running adventure bucket list.

?

5. Washington Park ? Denver, CO

Ok, so I am breaking the rules a little right from the start. ?Of course you have heard of Denver, but I am trying to distract you a little from the remainder of the list (quit peeking). ?Washington Park, or as the locals call it, Wash Park, is very special to me. ?I spent most of the 1990?s training and racing in Colorado, living a warm-up distance away from the Park entrance. ?But why does this make the list you ask? ?Well, many folks travel to Denver for business and do not always have time to hit the main attractions of the high peaks and Boulder tends to get all the running attention.? Wash Park is the heart beat of Denver, serving as the place to be for everyone active. ?It is the ?happy hour? of the running scene and is literally an outdoor recreation center that revivals any of the better known city parks in the Country.

4.?Moab, Utah

Most of us have heard of Moab and probably seen a few car commercials shot on location.? Moab and Utah is like no other State in the US.? It?s diverse landscape sets it apart providing some of the coolest land features in the World and maybe beyond, as you feel like you are in a different world.? Moab is best known as a mountain biking mecca, but is becoming a great run destination for those in search of dry dirt trails in the Spring, as the snow melts at home.? Unlike the other destinations on the top 5 list, Moab is not easy to get to and requires a road trip mindset.? But this is the genius of the area as you are transformed into an explorer itching to get out and run buttes and plateaus, slick rock, natural formed arches, stopping every so often, expecting to see smoke signals launching high above the rock pillar in the distance.? Moab is like no other and is not just for fat tires anymore.

3. Lantau Trail ? Lantau Island, Hong Kong

The 70-kilometer trail system on Lantau Island is divided into 12 stages and offers some of Hong Kong?s most rugged and beautiful scenery. This is a very hilly, mountainous trail, winding through forests and crossing over two of the island?s highest summits, but it also offers stunning views of the South China Sea.? The steep terrain and Asian beauty alone makes this run experience standout.? But by having the unique opportunity to run to ?The Big Buddha,? the worlds largest buddha statue, and visit the Po Lin Monastery, makes this a one of a kind trail run adventure and cultural experience. And, you don?t have to hire a Sherpa guide to get you there, with trailhead access less than an hour from the Hong Kong airport.

?(4) The Cool Impossible_Lantau Trail

?

2. Teton Crest Trail ? Jackson Hole WY

When you first think of Jackson Hole and the Tetons, you most likely think Grand Teton National Park and the gateway to Yellowstone National Park.? The Tetons are my training grounds and offer up what I believe to be the best mountain running in the US.? ?The Teton Crest Trail is 64km long, running North and South along the Teton Range.? You will traverse canyons, climb over several high passes, and run through high alpine meadows with the Cathedral mountain group staring you in the face.? This is stunning, world-class alpine exposure that can be easily accessed at several trailhead parking areas allowing you to pick and chose which trail section is in order for the day?s run.

?(2) The Cool Impossible_Teton Crest Trail

?

1. Ometepe Island ? Nicaragua

First time experiences are always high on my radar and Ometepe Island is one of the most unique places I have ever run.? For one, I have never run up a volcano before, let along running up two.? Add in monkeys, hanging coconuts, beautiful beaches, lung searing vertical climbs through a jungle maze with the potential for an active eruption at any moment, and you have yourself an adventure and cultural experience beyond imagine.? Running the trails of Ometepe will take you far away from the rest of the world, providing peace, intrigue, and mystical images of past Indian inhabitants?on this sacred land.

?(1) The Cool Impossible_Ometepe Island

Eric Orton?s experiences with the Tarahumara and his study of the biomechanics of running have led him to the cutting edge of the sport and made him the go-to guy for athletes everywhere.? The former fitness director for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Orton now personally oversees the training of dozens of athletes, from recreational racers to elite ultra-marathoners.? Rhode Island on track to be 10th state with gay marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? The number of U.S. states allowing gay marriage is set to enter double digits now that Rhode Island's state Senate has taken a landmark vote.

Legislation allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed passed Wednesday evening by a comfortable 26-12 margin. The House has already passed the bill, but will hold a largely procedural final vote next week before the bill goes to Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, who said he will sign it into law.

When he does, the last holdout in the region will join the five other New England states that already allow gay marriage. Nine states and the District of Columbia now allow gay marriage. Delaware could be the next state to follow suit ? gay marriage legislation narrowly passed the Delaware House on Tuesday and now heads to that state's Senate for consideration.

Hundreds of people filled the Rhode Island Statehouse with cheers following the vote.

"It shouldn't have taken this long," said Michael Sherman, a gay man from Warwick who watched the vote. "Religion is a choice. Being gay is not. Why should someone be able to say I can't get married because of their religion?"

Marriage legislation has been introduced in this heavily Catholic state for nearly two decades, only to languish on the legislative agenda. Supporters mounted a renewed push this year, and the Senate vote was seen as the critical test after the House easily passed the bill. Chafee called Wednesday's vote historic.

"I'm very much looking forward to signing this," he told The Associated Press as he congratulated supporters.

The first gay marriages in Rhode Island could take place Aug. 1, when the legislation would take effect. Civil unions would no longer be available to same-sex couples as of that date, though the state would continue to recognize existing civil unions. Lawmakers approved civil unions two years ago, though few couples have sought them.

Hundreds of opponents also gathered at the Statehouse for the vote, singing hymns and holding signs as the Senate deliberated. Rev. David Rodriguez, a Providence minister, said he was disappointed by the vote. He said he planned to continue to stand up for traditional marriage.

"Marriage between a man and a woman is what God wanted," he said. "We will continue to do what we know how to do: Keep praying and preaching."

The Roman Catholic Church was the bill's most significant opponent. During the Senate's emotional debate several senators said they struggled mightily, weighing their personal religious beliefs against stories they heard from gay constituents or their families.

Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, said she lost sleep over her vote but decided, despite opposition from the Catholic Church, to vote "on the side of love."

"I'm a practicing Catholic. I'm proud to be a Catholic," she said, adding that it was the personal stories of gays, lesbians and their families in her district who convinced her. "I struggled with this for days, for weeks. It's certainly not an easy vote."

Opponents of the bill tried unsuccessfully to send the question to the voters as a ballot referendum. After that failed, Sen. Harold Metts, D-Providence, told his colleagues that he couldn't go against his religious convictions and that residents in his community are more concerned about other matters.

"My constituents are more concerned with bread-and-butter issues," he said. "They want food on the table. They want their kids to get a good education."

The Rhode Island legislation states that religious institutions may set their own rules regarding who is eligible to marry within the faith and specifies that no religious leader is obligated to officiate at any marriage ceremony and no religious group is required to provide facilities or services related to a gay marriage.

While ministers already cannot be forced to marry anyone, the exemption helped assuage some senators' concerns and ease the bill's passage this year.

Two years after gay marriage legislation foundered in Rhode Island, supporters regrouped and this year mounted an aggressive and coordinated campaign that included organized labor, religious leaders, business owners and leaders including Chafee and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

The bill's chances improved further when Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed said she would allow the bill to move forward, despite her opposition to gay marriage. The Newport Democrat voted no on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the Senate's five Republicans announced they would support the measure. Senate Minority Leader Dennis Algiere, R-Westerly, said the decision came down to core Republican principles.

"This is an issue of fairness, equality and civil rights," Algiere said. "Those are our values, and we stand by them."

House Speaker Gordon Fox, D-Providence, who is gay, had vowed to hold a vote on gay marriage early in the session. He said his chamber will hold hearing April 30 on the small changes made to the bill in the Senate. A final vote is tentatively scheduled for May 2.

Annie Silva, 61, predicted that more states would soon join Rhode Island. Silva and her partner of 30 years live just across the border in North Attleboro, Mass. She hopes to retire to her home state of Rhode Island now that the state is poised to extend marriage rights to gays and lesbians.

"No. 10 is a nice round number, but I'd like it to be bigger. Fifty sounds good to me," she said.

Stock futures climb as earnings roll in; claims data on tap

By Chuck Mikolajczak

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures advanced on Thursday, as investors dealt with a raft of earnings, including those of 3M Co, along with data on the labor market.

Dow component ExxonMobil Corp , the largest U.S. company by market capitalization reports its results Thursday, a day after the company boosted its quarterly dividend.

Fellow Dow component 3M Co reported a slight rise in profit on modest growth in sales of its wide array of products, but shares fell 4.1 percent to $103.50 in premarket trading.

Qualcomm Inc lost 5.8 percent to $62.20 before the opening bell after the mobile chipmaker forecast earnings below expectations late Wednesday.

"The focus remains on the fact that companies continue to mostly beat expectations for earnings but also, many are disappointing on the forecast," said Rick Meckler, president of investment firm LibertyView Capital Management in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"So it is leaving investors with mixed feelings with no real reason to sell off stocks but not enough of a reason to really drive it materially higher - that pattern is likely to continue for a while."

Companies expected to post earnings after the close include Amazon.com Inc and Starbucks .

Data on the labor market is due at 8:30 a.m. EDT with the release of weekly initial jobless claims data. Economists in a Reuters survey forecast a total of 351,000 new filings compared with 352,000 in the prior week.

Verizon Communications Inc will be in focus after sources told Reuters it has hired advisers to prepare a possible $100 billion cash and stock bid to take full control of Verizon Wireless from joint venture partner, Vodafone Group Plc . Verizon shares edged up 0.4 percent to $52 in light premarket trade.

S&P 500 futures rose 6.4 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration of the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures added 46 points and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 13.25 points.

PulteGroup Inc , the No. 2 U.S. homebuilder, returned to a quarterly profit after reporting a loss a year earlier, as it benefited from low mortgage rates. Shares fell 2.5 percent to $19.20 in premarket trade.

Akamai Technologies Inc surged 19.4 percent to $43.08 in premarket trading after the internet content delivery company forecast second-quarter results above analysts' expectations late on Wednesday.

Earnings season has been largely positive, with 68.4 percent of S&P 500 companies that have reported results so far beating expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning. Since 1994, 63 percent have surpassed estimates on average, while the beat rate is 67 percent for the past four quarters.

Analysts see earnings growth of 3.1 percent this quarter, up from expectations of 1.5 percent at the start of the month.

European shares edged up on Thursday, with the benchmark FTSEurofirst 300 index rising for a fifth straight session, helped by gains in car maker Volkswagen and telecoms group Vodafone <.eu/>

Asian shares rose, with recovering commodities and views that a run of weak global economic data will encourage major central banks to keep or deepen their monetary stimulus improving risk sentiment.

Psychopaths are not neurally equipped to have concern for others

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Prisoners who are psychopaths lack the basic neurophysiological "hardwiring" that enables them to care for others, according to a new study by neuroscientists at the University of Chicago and the University of New Mexico.

"A marked lack of empathy is a hallmark characteristic of individuals with psychopathy," said the lead author of the study, Jean Decety, the Irving B. Harris Professor in Psychology and Psychiatry at UChicago. Psychopathy affects approximately 1 percent of the United States general population and 20 percent to 30 percent of the male and female U.S. prison population. Relative to non-psychopathic criminals, psychopaths are responsible for a disproportionate amount of repetitive crime and violence in society.

"This is the first time that neural processes associated with empathic processing have been directly examined in individuals with psychopathy, especially in response to the perception of other people in pain or distress," he added.

The results of the study, which could help clinical psychologists design better treatment programs for psychopaths, are published in the article, "Brain Responses to Empathy-Eliciting Scenarios Involving Pain in Incarcerated Individuals with Psychopathy," which appears online April 24 in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Joining Decety in the study were Laurie Skelly, a graduate student at UChicago; and Kent Kiehl, professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico.

For the study, the research team tested 80 prisoners between ages 18 and 50 at a correctional facility. The men volunteered for the test and were tested for levels of psychopathy using standard measures.

They were then studied with functional MRI technology, to determine their responses to a series of scenarios depicting people being intentionally hurt. They were also tested on their responses to seeing short videos of facial expressions showing pain.

The participants in the high psychopathy group exhibited significantly less activation in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, lateral orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala and periaqueductal gray parts of the brain, but more activity in the striatum and the insula when compared to control participants, the study found.

The high response in the insula in psychopaths was an unexpected finding, as this region is critically involved in emotion and somatic resonance. Conversely, the diminished response in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and amygdala is consistent with the affective neuroscience literature on psychopathy. This latter region is important for monitoring ongoing behavior, estimating consequences and incorporating emotional learning into moral decision-making, and plays a fundamental role in empathic concern and valuing the well-being of others.

"The neural response to distress of others such as pain is thought to reflect an aversive response in the observer that may act as a trigger to inhibit aggression or prompt motivation to help," the authors write in the paper.

"Hence, examining the neural response of individuals with psychopathy as they view others being harmed or expressing pain is an effective probe into the neural processes underlying affective and empathy deficits in psychopathy," the authors wrote.

The study with prisoners was supported with a $1.6 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

(AP) ? Apple is opening the doors to its bank vault, saying it will distribute $100 billion in cash to its shareholders by the end of 2015. At the same time, the company said revenue for the current quarter could fall from the year before, which would be the first decline in many years.

Apple CEO Tim Cook also suggested that the company won't release any new products until the fall, contrary to expectations that there would be a new iPhone and iPads out this summer.

Apple Inc. on Tuesday said it will expand its share buyback program to $60 billion ? the largest buyback authorization in history. It is also raising its dividend by 15 percent from $2.65 to $3.05 per share. That equates to a dividend yield of 3 percent at current stock prices. The average yield for the 20 largest dividend-paying companies in the U.S. is 3.1 percent, according to Standard & Poor's.

Investors have been clamoring for Apple to give them access to its cash hoard, which ended March at an unprecedented $145 billion. Apple's tight grip on its cash, along with the lack of ground-breaking new products has been blamed for the steep decline in its stock price over the winter.

News of the cash bonanza coincided with the company's release of a poor quarterly outlook for the three-month period that ends in June.

Apple released its fiscal second quarter earnings after the stock market closed Tuesday. The company's stock initially rose 5 percent to $425 in extended trading, then retreated $2.63, or 0.7 percent, to $403.50 as the CEO talked about new products arriving in the fall.

The shares are still down 40 percent from a peak of $705.07 hit on Sept. 21, when the iPhone 5 went on sale.

"The decline in Apple's stock price over the last couple of quarters has been very frustrating for all of us ... but we'll continue to do what we do best," CEO Tim Cook said on a conference call with analysts after the release of the results. But he reinforced that the company's job is not to boost its stock price in the short term.

"The most important objective for Apple will always be creating innovative products," he added.

Apple's results beat the consensus estimate of analysts who follow the company, though it posted its first profit decline in ten years.

Net income was $9.5 billion, or $10.09 per share, down 18 percent from $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per share, in the same period a year ago.

Revenue was $43.6 billion, up 11 percent from last year's $39.2 billion.

Analysts were expecting earnings of $9.97 per share on revenue of $42.3 billion, according to FactSet.

For the quarter that just started, Apple said it expects sales of $33.5 billion to $35.5 billion. In the same quarter last year, sales were $35 billion. Wall Street was expecting sales of $38 billion.

The June quarter is generally a weak one for Apple, since consumers tend to wait for the next iPhone, which the company usually releases in the fall. But a year-over-year decline is a signal that Apple is failing to capitalize on the continued growth of smartphone sales. Sales are tapering off in U.S. and other mature markets, and not many consumers in India and China can afford iPhones.

"Our fiscal 2012 results were incredibly strong and that's making comparisons very difficult this year," said Cook.

Apple shipped 37.4 million iPhones in the latest quarter, up 7 percent from a year ago. That confounded expectations that shipments might fall, but it was still a weak number compared to many previous quarters, when shipments doubled year over year. The average wholesale price of an iPhone also fell to $613 as Apple cut the price of its oldest model, the iPhone 4, to appeal to buyers in developing countries.

Apple started paying a dividend last summer and has been buying back a modest number of shares, enough to balance the dilution created by its employee stock option program but not to make a dent in its cash pile. The company says it's now expanding the buybacks, which started in October and are set to run till the end of 2015, from $10 billion to $60 billion. It's raising the quarterly dividend starting with the payment due May 16.

The company has faced continued pressure from Wall Street over the use of its cash, which earns less than 1 percent in interest. Investors reason that if the company has no better use for the money, it should be handing it over to shareholders. The company had said it was considering ways to use the money, and this year engaged in a public debate with a hedge fund manager who wanted it to institute a new class of shares to attract dividend-loving investors.

Paradoxically, cash-flush Apple will be borrowing money to support the buybacks and dividends. That's because two-thirds of its cash resides in overseas accounts. It doesn't bring the money into the U.S. because it prefers not to pay U.S. corporate income taxes on it. Instead, it will be using cash from U.S.-derived revenue and U.S. accounts, plus borrowed money.

Apple is effectively betting that the U.S. federal corporate tax rate of 35 percent ? one of the highest in the world ? will come down in the future, or that there will be a tax repatriation amnesty period, as there was in 2004.

When a company starts doling out its cash to shareholders, it's usually a sign that its growth is stalling and it's finding it hard to identify good ways to invest in its own business. But Apple is still growing fast by the standards of large companies, and its cash pile-up is a reflection of the extraordinary success of the iPhone.

Compared to its earnings, Apple's stock price is low. In buying Apple stock, investors are paying $9.20 for every dollar of Apple's annual net income. By comparison, they're willing to pay $24 for every dollar of Google's profit.

That suggests investors have concluded Apple will never again launch a revolutionary product like the iPhone or iPad. The commitment to bigger buybacks may reinforce that impression, said David Tan, a Georgetown University assistant professor of strategy who focuses on technology.

"How are we going to read into what this move says about Apple's long-term prospects?" Tan said. "Does this mean this is all that Apple has left to offer or is this just something temporary while we wait for the next big thing from the company?"

Investors have grown increasingly frustrated with Apple. The company has only been releasing updates to its existing line of mobile devices and computers since Cook became CEO 20 months ago instead of blazing technological trails as it did with the iPod's 2001 unveiling, the iPhone's 2007 debut and the iPad's introduction in 2010, said Lauren Balter, an analyst for Oracle Investment Research. At the same time, Samsung Electronics has been gaining market share with larger smartphone screens and other features while Google Inc. is creating a buzz with its own Nexus tablets. Google is also expanding into "wearable computing" with Internet-connected glasses that are expected to go on sale late this year or early next year.

"The market is tired of the same old thing at Apple," Balter said. "Investors are looking for innovation. The reality is that people are looking at other products now and they are looking at other cool features from competitors."

Apple is rumored to be working on a "smart" watch and a revolutionary TV set, but it hasn't confirmed that. On Tuesday's call, Cook sounded slightly more open to making an iPhone with a larger screen, saying merely that Apple would not ship a phone with a larger screen as long as that meant tradeoffs in other measures of screen quality, like brightness.

Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross said now that Apple has laid out plans for its cash hoard, investor focus will shift back to Apple's upcoming products.

"What I am hoping is now that we have gotten through this, people will start focusing a little bit more on the fundamentals," Cross said. "And I think the fundamentals this quarter showed that demand remains strong for their products. I don't think the Apple brand has been diminished at all, based on the numbers we have seen."

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) ? A second Mississippi man investigated in connection to ricin-laced letters sent to the president and a U.S. senator said Wednesday that investigators "ripped" through his house during an hours-long search the previous day after charges were dropped against another man in the case.

No investigators appeared to be at the Tupelo home Wednesday morning, and Everett Dutschke said he'd gone to a friend's house to rest. Piles of items could be seen all over the floor through the window. The home was searched Tuesday by dozens of officials, some in hazmat suits, from early in the afternoon until about 11 p.m. CDT. Officials declined to comment on what they had found or on the next phase of the investigation.

At one point, two FBI agents and two members of the state's chemical response team left Dutschke's property and began combing through ditches, culverts and woods about a block away from his house in the neighborhood of single-family detached homes.

Dutschke (DUHST'-kee), who spoke with The Associated Press by telephone during the search, said his house was also searched last week. He said he and his wife had gone to a friend's Wednesday because they didn't feel safe at their home.

"They ripped everything out of the house," he said Wednesday morning, adding: "I haven't slept at all."

No charges have been filed against Dutschke and he hasn't been arrested. Both he and Paul Kevin Curtis, who had faced charges in the case, say they have no idea how to make the poisonous ricin and had nothing to do with sending the letters to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Mississippi county judge Sadie Holland.

Curtis, a 45-year-old celebrity impersonator, has maintained his innocence since his arrest.

Referring to investigators' questions, Curtis said after he was released from custody Tuesday afternoon, "I thought they said rice and I said, 'I don't even eat rice.' ... I respect President Obama. I love my country and would never do anything to pose a threat to him or any other U.S. official."

A one-sentence document filed by federal prosecutors said charges against Curtis were dropped, but left open the possibility they could be reinstated if authorities found more to prove their case. Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment, but the document said the ongoing investigation had revealed new information. It did not elaborate.

Dutschke and Judge Holland know each other: In 2007, he lost his Republican bid for a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives to Holland's son, Democratic state Rep. Steve Holland, who was the incumbent.

Steve Holland previously said that during a political rally in the small town of Verona in 2007, Dutschke gave a speech disparaging the Holland family, including him, his mother and his wife.

Holland said his mother, who spoke just after Dutschke at the rally, called him back on the stage and said, "You're not going to disparage me. Now, you apologize to me."

Holland said Dutschke returned to the stage and at Judge Holland's instruction, got down on his knees and apologized, but Dutschke disputed that Tuesday.

"That's just Steve Holland being Steve Holland," he said, adding that he did not get down on his knees and apologize for anything. "He's a bit grandiose about the way he describes things."

Since Curtis' arrest at his Corinth, Miss., home on April 17, his attorneys have said their client didn't do it and suggested he was framed. An FBI agent testified in court this week that no evidence of ricin was found in searches of Curtis' home.

The dismissal is the latest twist in a case that has been strange from the beginning and rattled the country during the same week as the Boston Marathon bombing and a fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas.

Dutschke and Curtis are no strangers to each other. Dutschke said the two had a disagreement and the last contact they had was in 2010. Dutschke said he threatened to sue Curtis for saying he was a member of Mensa, a group for people with high IQs.

Hal Neilson, an attorney for Curtis, said the defense gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis.

"Dutschke came up," he said. "They (prosecutors) took it and ran with it. I could not tell you if he's the man or he's not the man, but there was something there they wanted to look into."

An FBI intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP said the two ricin-laced letters addressed to Obama and Wicker said: "To see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance." Both were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message."

Curtis was already well known to Wicker because he had written to the Republican senator and other officials. Curtis also wrote a novel called "Missing Pieces," about black-market body parts he claimed to have found while working at a hospital ? a claim the hospital says is untrue. Curtis posted similar language on his Facebook page and elsewhere. The documents indicate Curtis had been distrustful of the government for years. He told the AP on Tuesday that he realizes his writings made him an easy target.

Multiple online posts under the name Kevin Curtis on various websites that could be seen by anyone refer to the conspiracy he claimed to uncover when working at a local hospital from 1998 to 2000. In one post, Curtis said he sent letters to Wicker and other politicians. He signed off: "This is Kevin Curtis & I approve this message."

Christi McCoy, another attorney for Curtis, said she doesn't know what new information prosecutors have, but said the plot to frame her client was "very, very diabolical."

Curtis, dressed after his release Tuesday in a black suit, red shirt, necktie and sunglasses, said he met Dutschke in 2005 but that for some reason Dutschke "hated" and "stalked" him. "To this day I have no clue of why he hates me."

Ricin is derived from the castor plant that makes castor oil. There is no antidote and it is at its deadliest when inhaled. It can be aerosolized, released into the air and inhaled. The Homeland Security handbook says the amount of ricin that fits on the head of a pin is enough to kill an adult if properly prepared.

Dutschke said agents asked him about Curtis, whether Dutschke would take a lie-detector test and if he had ever bought castor beans, which can be used to make the potent poison.

"I'm a patriotic American. I don't have any grudges against anybody. I did not send the letters," Dutschke said.

After charges were dropped against Curtis, he said: "I'm a little shocked."

Tuesday's events began when the third day of a preliminary and detention hearing was canceled without officials explaining the change. Within two hours, Curtis had been released.

FBI Agent Brandon Grant said in court Monday that searches last week of Curtis' vehicle and house in Corinth, found no ricin, ingredients for the poison, or devices used to make it. A search of Curtis' computers found no evidence he researched making ricin. Authorities produced no other physical evidence at the hearings tying Curtis to the letters.

All the envelopes and stamps were self-adhesive, Grant said Monday, meaning they won't yield DNA evidence. One fingerprint was found on the letter sent to a Lee County judge, but the FBI doesn't know who it belongs to, Grant said.

The experience, Curtis said, has been a nightmare for his family. He has four children ? ages, 8, 16, 18 and 20. It also has made him reflect deeply on his life.

"I've become closer to God through all this, closer with my children and I've even had some strained relationships with some family and cousins and this has brought us closer as a family," he said.

Can Your Parents Marriage Or Divorce Affect Your Future ... - Gurl.com

girl between two guys

If your parents had affairs, history may repeat in your love life, too. | Source: Shutterstock

Lots of things affect your relationships and love life?where you live, who you hang out with?but your parents? marriage?and any affairs they have actually have one of the most profound effects on how your own love life turns out when you get older. Studies show that?s even true if your parents? affairs went down when you were too young to understand what was happening at the time.

This is especially true if your parents are or are getting divorced as the result of an affair.

One expert, a psychologist named Judith Wallerstein, explained that the impact of divorce (especially from affairs) can be lasting and traumatizing no matter how old you are when your parents split up. ?It affects personality, the ability to trust, expectations and the ability to cope with change,? she said.

This is because what you see your parents do and how you see your parents interact at home becomes the standard for you?if that?s what you see and perceive as normal, then that?s what you?re most likely to reenact in your own love life later on.

One couples counselor revealed that when one partner has an affair, she always asks if his or her parents did the same?and the answer is almost always yes. The experts also revealed that adult children of divorced parents who?d had affairs can be more promiscuous, have more short-term relationships and more sexual partners, and keep sexual pleasure separate from emotional attachment. (Frankly, as long as all partners involved are safe, healthy, happy and respectful, that?s not necessarily a bad thing?we?re not here for that slut shaming nonsense.)

What?s more, the more your parents argue in front of you?especially for guys?the more likely, experts noted, that you?re prone to affairs when you grow up.

Does this all mean you?re doomed to a crappy love life if your parents split up or had affairs? Nope! But it?s a good thing to know if you start noticing patterns in your own behavior, because it can help you?and potentially a counselor?see the root causes and help address them. Plus, if you?ve witnessed your parents having affairs and the fallout it can cause, you may swing in the opposite direction and be less likely to stray because you?ve seen the damage it can do. Just because your past?influences?your future, it doesn?t mean it?controls?it!

Do you think your parents? relationship plays a role in your own love life? Do you think you?d be more prone to have affairs if you knew your parents did? Tell us in the comments!

Why do we always blame the other girl for affairs?

Afghan quake, floods kills at least 33

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - An earthquake in Afghanistan's east and flash floods in the north killed at least 33 people on Wednesday as hundreds of traditional mud-brick homes collapsed, officials said.

The 5.7 magnitude quake, which hit before 2 p.m. (0930 GMT) was felt as far away as the Indian capital New Delhi and was the latest in a spate of tremors to shake Asia this month.

The quake was 65 km (40 miles) deep with an epicenter 11 km (seven miles) from Mehtar Lam, capital of the eastern province of Laghman, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At least 18 people were killed in adjacent Nangarhar and Kunar provinces and the death toll was expected to rise, a spokesman for the Afghan Red Crescent Society said. Some 70 people were injured in Nangarhar alone.

Hundreds of homes collapsed across Kunar and Nangarhar.

Wednesday saw steady rain across most of Afghanistan, which would have weakened the mud-brick dwellings many Afghans live in, according to the National Disaster Management Authority.

The agency did not yet have its own casualty figures.

Rain also caused flash-flooding in the northern province of Balkh earlier on Wednesday, killing 15 people, provincial council member Fazel Hadidi said.

Buildings swayed in New Delhi and panicky people ran into the street in the disputed northern region of Kashmir, where an quake killed about 75,000 people in 2005, most on the Pakistan side. Wednesday's quake was also felt in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

Last week, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 200 people in southwest China, a few days after another powerful tremor killed 35 people in Pakistan near the border with Iran.

Jump-Start Your Productivity with the "Path of Highest Enjoyment"

Staring at a daunting list of tasks is rough, but staring at that first item can be just as bad. If that first task is just too unnerving to start, Lifehack.org recommends switching to a task that you find more enjoyable.

Lifehack calls this the "path of highest enjoyment:"

I found one of the easiest and most effortless ways to complete my projects is to be flexible in my project management approach. For example, most people will finish the tasks in their to-do list in sequential order. Task 1 comes first, followed by Task 2, then Task 3, etc. Sounds straight forward and easy, doesn?t it?

I did this for a long time until I realized it wasn?t the most effective method. For example, some days I would procrastinate on a project because I felt like doing Task 3 rather than Task 1. Yet by the project management rule, I needed to do Task 1 first before I could do Task 3.

On the other hand, when I give myself flexibility over what to do (while maintaining within the confines of the project), working on the project becomes like a big adventure. This approach makes me feel like I?m in a candy store and I get to pick whatever candy I want.

Sometimes, this isn't an option, and you need to get things done in sequence (or in order of importance and urgency). But when a project is feeling a bit slow, this (like structured procrastination) can at least help jump-start your productivity. Hit the link for more tips on finishing what you start.

Apple releases Q2 2013 results: 37.4 million iPhones, 19.5 million iPads and $43.6 billion in revenue

Apple announces Q2 2013 Financial Results

Apple today announced their financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2013 (the months of January, February, and March). Apple brought in $9.5 billion in profit off of $43.6 billion in revenue. In previous years Apple offered conservative guidance on revenue and profits, though recently they made the switched to publishing a range into which they realistically expect the fiscal results to fall. And Apple's results easily fell within that range.

Those buckets of cash come courtesy of sales that included 37.4 million iPhones, 19.5 million iPads, and "just under 4 million" Macs. Apple historically has not broken down the individual models within these product categories, though reports from carriers indicate that the mix on iPhones has been a little over one half iPhone 5 and the rest split between the less expensive iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

?We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software and services, and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline.?

While the results might have fallen short of analysts' lofty expectations (or beaten analysts' pessimism), Apple did exceed the results of the same quarter one year ago. For the record, Q2 2013 was up 11% from $39.2 billion in revenue and down 18% from $11.6 billion in net profits. Apple's consistently brought in billions of dollars in revenue and profits for quarter-after-quarter, though it remains to be seen whether today's results will be enough to satisfy investors and analysts. Given the pummeling the stock has taken over the past six months, we wouldn't be holding our breath.

As an added bonus to shareholders, Apple's increased the dividend for this quarter by 15% from $2.65 to $3.05. The company has also added $50 billion to their stock buyback program, which is now projected to spend $100 billion by the end of 2015. Thanks to the additional $9.5 billion in income from this quarter, Apple still has $145 billion in the bank with which to play.

As usual, a conference call with Apple execs is scheduled to kick off shortly. And as usual, we'll be following along to pass along to you any notes of interest that Cook and company drop. While we're waiting, are you satisfied with the latest additions to Apple's cash pile or did Wall Street's relentless hype machine get to you?

Apple Q2 2013 conference call notes of interest

  • Tim Cook (TC): We know we haven't lived up to everybody's expectations. We acknowledge that our margins have slowed and our growth rates decreased. Our margins are closer to what they were a few years ago. Our results in 2012 were extraordinary, which makes comparisons difficult.
  • TC: These comparisons are made difficult also thanks to the deliberate low margins of the iPad Mini launch.
  • TC: Stock price decline has been frustrating to all of us, despite the strengths of Apple's business. Our most important objective will always be creating innovative new products.
  • TC: Our teams are hard at work on exciting new products that we can't wait to release this year and through 2014.
  • TC: Since we began our stock buybacks and dividends last year we've already returned $10 billion to shareholders. But we're still bringing in capital in excess beyond our needs. Apple is increasing its cash return program to $100 billion through 2015. The current dividend is being increased by 15%. We appreciate the input offered by shareholders.

Q&A

  • Q: Why did income come in at the low end of projections?
  • PO: There were some unfavorable adjustments and Apple had to spend significantly to get iPad Mini inventory up to desired channel levels of 4-6 weeks.
  • Q: Is Apple hitting a wall in China?
  • TC: We just had our best quarter ever in China, bringing in revenue of $8.8 billion. That's up 11% year-over-year. iPads grew 138% year-over-year with new records for sell-through for iPads and iPhones. We have 11 stores in China, and expect to double that in two years.
  • Q: Why are iPhone average sale prices down?
  • PO: It's due to mix, with more iPhone 4 sales in the sales mix and aggressive priced in developing markets. Average selling price for iPhones was down $23.
  • TC: As you get further from a previous product launch there's a general lower mix than where it starts. All things being equal you'd expect to be seeing that on most of our products.
  • Q: The smartphone market grew around 30%, while Apple's iPhone sales are up in the single digits. Is Apple focused on that expanding market share, and why is there a disconnect between Apple's products and the market data?
  • TC: The numbers that we've seen from IDC would indicate that the tablet market in March decline 30% from the December holiday quarter while Apple only declined 15%. We did much better than the market.
  • TC: On the phone side, we did grow channel inventory over the year ago quarter because we were "catching up" from the iPhone 5 launch. Normalized, if the smartphone market did grow 30% and we didn't measure up to that, we want to grow faster. What's important in addition to market growth is customer satisfaction, loyalty, and repurchase rates. We see an enormous market of potential smartphone buyers coming to market, so we've made the iPhone 4 even more affordable to make it more attractive to new buyers. "We believe that the phone for the price point that we're offering is an incredible value for people."
  • Q: Has anything changed on your views of the 5-inch smartphone market?
  • TC: My view continues to be that the iPhone 5 has the absolute best display in the industry. Some customers value large screen size, others value resolution, color quality, brightness, portability, and app compatibility. Our competitors have made some significant trade-offs in many of these areas. We will not launch a larger screen iPhone while these trade-offs exist.
  • Q: You said something about new categories?
  • TC: I did! We're very excited for new growth in potential new categories.
  • Q: Is that in the next quarter or year?
  • TC: I didn't say when. awkward silence
  • Q: What are you hearing from your customers on why they're not buying a new Mac?
  • TC: I think the reason that we were down 2% last quarter is that the market for PCs is incredibly week, it was down 14% year-over-year. At the same time we sold almost 20 million iPads. It's certainly true that some of those iPads cannibalized some Macs. What's likely happening is people are extending their upgrade cycles. I don't think this is a dead market - it has a lot of light in it, we're going to continue to innovate in it. The growth in iPads may end up benefiting the Mac. Our strategy of making the best computers isn't changing.
