OK, that's a bit melodramatic, but it's true! You will never have a profitable online business and make a name for yourself if you drop the ball on planning out how you are going to grow your business. You have to set goals, have weekly and daily tasks and implement them routinely to drive traffic to your site, build your list and monetize your business. Plain and simple.
It took me a long time to learn this lesson. I didn't really have a plan when I got started online. I thought I would do some research, try some things and see where it lead me. I became an internet drifter. It took me way to long to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up and the longer I drifted, the more unsure of myself I became. You have to go into business with a plan and stick to it. Now that I work with those who are just starting to build their businesses, I see this all the time. It's not unusual. It's one of the main reasons so many fail.
Over the next couple of months I am going to be open and transparent with you and show you how I plan my work and work my plan. (Please forgive the cheesy cliche`) I'm going to show you the marketing I do to drive traffic, build my list and monetize my business. I've slacked off lately due to "$@*! happens" in life and need to get myself back on track and thought this would be a perfect opportunity to teach you many of my marketing strategies at the same time.
So, what do you say we get started!
If you are a beginner to all of this, you may not be ready for some of what I will be showing you, but most of the daily marketing strategies I use are the same ones that I teach my beginner clients. If it's over your head, bookmark it and come back to it later. If you have questions about anything I'm doing, please ask. I will be answering questions in the comments as we go.
First, we start with the planning phase. Many seasoned Internet marketers plan at least 12 months out and know exactly what they are going to focus on each and every month for the next year.
For instance:
January - Find 4 new JV partners for 2012
February - Start a membership site
March - Run a JV promotion with Joe Blow to launch membership site
April - Create 4 new products
? and so on through the entire year.
To be honest, I'm not quite there yet. I do a little different version of the same. I decide what I want to accomplish in my business and the new skill sets I want to learn for the year. In 2012 my goals are:
Create a bi weekly i-magazine newsletter
Increase my list by 5ooo
Set up and implement a system to outsource much more and find a dependable VA
Set up a monthly advertising budget and buy banner and text ads in newsletters and mommy blogs
Learn and start PPC advertising
Double my efforts in affiliate marketing via email, newsletters, affiliate niche sites
Become a much better copywriter
So far I have created the i-mag newsletter, I've ramped up my list building efforts and are seeing good results and have increased my affiliate marketing efforts some, but not nearly enough. I plan 3 months out at a time, tackling one main project a month. My next 3 month plan looks like this:
March - Build up The Happypreneur i-Mag Newsletter
Increase Newsletter list by 100 (keep in mind this is just one of my lists, I will be actively working to increase my other lists as well)
Find and secure 6 expert panelists to write for the newsletter on a monthly basis
Create awareness of the newsletter to drive traffic to TheHappypreneur.com
April - Build Up ProfitMomentum.com membership
Revamp how the membership site is set up
Do a launch for the site
Set up 3-4 months content and schedule it out
May - Advertising Campaign Set Up
Research newsletters and mommy blogs and place banner ads
Design or outsource banner ads
Take a PPC class
Set up 1st PPC campaign
Those are the projects that I am going to be working on over the next 3 months. Remember when making your monthly goals, only do one project a month because this is in addition to your regular weekly and daily tasks. You still have to drive traffic to your sites, build your list and sell your products/services and make affiliate offers to monetize your business.
