Syria troops regain key Damascus suburb

(AP) ? Syrian troops flushed out rebels from a key Damascus suburb Saturday, regaining control of a key area just outside the capital after a 10-day assault that left dozens dead, hundreds wounded and caused a major humanitarian crisis.

The relentless offensive against Douma forced residents and fighters to flee, leaving a trail of destruction and bodies in the streets, activists said.

In Zamalka, another suburb of Damascus, activists said more than 30 people were killed and many others wounded Saturday evening when a mortar shell struck a car that exploded as a funeral procession was taking place.

The exact circumstances were not immediately clear. It was not known who fired the mortar.

World powers meeting in Geneva to push for an end to the bloodshed accepted a U.N.-brokered peace plan for Syria on Saturday, but left open whether President Bashar Assad could be part of a transitional government.

The sprawling suburb of Douma, on the outskirts of Damascus, has been a hotbed of dissent against Assad's regime since the start of the uprising in March 2011. Securing control of the suburb for a sustained period would be a significant triumph for the regime.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and local activist Mohammed Saeed said regime forces recaptured Douma late Friday. The latest offensive was the worst of several assaults on the area, the Observatory said.

"The situation in Douma is catastrophic. The suburb is badly destroyed," Saeed said via Skype, adding that he was among dozens of residents who fled on foot through the fields to safer areas for fear of being captured by security forces.

The state-run SANA news agency reported the government was still pursuing "armed terrorist groups" in its effort to "cleanse" Douma, using its term for the rebels, noting that dozens had been killed and their weapons seized.

Central Damascus is an Assad stronghold, but regime forces have battled to control the ring of suburbs and settlements in the surrounding countryside. The army launches frequent offensives in the suburbs only to see them slip back under rebel control.

Saeed said troops stormed two makeshift hospitals where seriously wounded people were being treated. "The doctors fled and the wounded remained. Their fate is unknown," he said.

The latest violence came as representatives of global and regional powers met Saturday in an increasingly desperate bid to agree on a peaceful formula to end the bloody crisis in Syria, including Assad's role in a transitional government.

The talks hosted by the United Nations at its European headquarters in Geneva were seen as a last-ditch attempt to salvage the peace plan brokered by the U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

The U.S. backed away from demands that Assad be excluded, hoping the concession would encourage Russia to put greater pressure on its longtime ally to end the violent crackdown that the opposition says has claimed over 14,000 lives.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisted that Assad would still have to go, saying "it is now "incumbent on Russia and China to show Assad the writing on the wall."

Moscow had refused to back a provision that would call for Assad to step aside, insisting that outsiders cannot order a political solution for Syria.

Annan said following talks that "it is for the people of Syria to come to a political agreement."

Syrian opposition groups also planned to meet Monday in Cairo to try to agree on a common vision to deal with the next stage in the conflict, Arab League deputy chief Ahmed ben Heli told reporters.

He said the foreign ministers from the five permanent U.N. Security Council members ? the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia also were invited, as were Annan and envoys from Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey and Tunisia.

Previous attempts in the past weeks to hold a similar meeting at the Arab League's headquarters in Cairo failed because of differences between opposition groups.

The death toll is rising daily as the conflict becomes increasingly militarized. Fighting also has left several rebel strongholds facing dire conditions.

Douma's residents suffer from daily shelling as well as shortages of food, electricity and running water, according to the Observatory. It also cited a shortage of cooking gas that has prevented people from cooking food since the latest campaign began on June 21.

The Observatory said about 100 families, mostly women and children, remain in Douma as men had to flee because of waves of arrests. Dozens of wounded people also are holed up in shelters and need urgent treatment after troops took over the main hospital in the area and damaged it, the Observatory said.

"Many of the wounded have died because of bad medical conditions," the Observatory said.

In other violence Saturday, a car bomb exploded in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, damaging a government building but causing no casualties since the building was closed for the weekend, according to SANA.

Activists also reported shelling by government troops and clashes between rebels and government forces in the central provinces of Hama and Homs, the eastern region of Deir el-Zour as well as Idlib and Aleppo to the north. Scores were reported killed in violence Saturday.

How To Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking

?

?

Are you frightened of speaking in public?

If so, then you?ll be pleased to know that you are not the only one! Research has found that speaking in public is the number one fear for most people. It comes even higher than the fear of dying.

So quite literally, people would rather die than be in front of a group of people and speak!

There is even a grand name for the fear of public speaking ? Glassophobia.

The research also found that the number two fear for most people is walking into a roomful of strangers. And third comes the fear of death.

My mercurial friend Andy Lopata even wrote a book about this phenomenon ? ?And Death Came Third? (Amazon USA? /Amazon UK).

Today in this extra-long post, I am sharing with you what I learnt last week when I spoke in front of 300+ people for 90 minutes. I kept the audience engaged during most of that time and received some encouraging feedback, both straight after my talk and also via various emails since then.

The event I spoke to was The Millionaire Author?s Bootcamp, run by my friend and book writing expert Stephanie Hale.

My talk was about how to self-publish a book and make it successful via Social Media as well as offline marketing ? it was all based around my best-selling book Get the Life you Love.

So you may well ask what the big deal is about me speaking at this event?

Well, it was the first time I have spoken on a big stage with such a large, discerning audience, hungry for information and for such a long time.

The previous biggest public talk I had done was at the London Bloggers Meetup in a London pub to a group of about 100 bloggers, along with my friend Leo Babauta in April 2011 ? and that was only for 10 minutes in front of a friendly and jolly audience.

This was also such a big thing for me because believe it or not, at one time I was rather shy and self-conscious! As a young boy, when we had to recite our times-tables in the front of the room, I used to rush through my tables like an express train and couldn?t wait to get back to my seat.

At college, I rarely spoke up in lectures and in social settings I was usually the quiet one, letting others lead the conversation. And yet, like all of you, I had so much to offer.

Things shifted for me when I trained as a coach and began to put myself out there much more. I threw myself into personal development and part of that involved being in front of people. It was all about letting go of the fear of others and not being concerned any more about what they thought of me.

??What you think of me is none of my business? ? Wayne Dwyer

The most challenging thing I experienced around people was at a personal development seminar when we had to look directly into a stranger?s eyes for 3 minutes without wavering. This may sound a little strange to some of you ? but it was one of the most amazing and liberating experiences for me when I did this exercise the first time around.

The exercise was all about being totally vulnerable and open to someone else and seeing their own humanity and vulnerability. Once I had done this exercise, it became very easy for me to be comfortable around other people.

As for being in front of large crowds, I volunteered to be a ?mike-runner? at seminars run by Fiona Harrold, one of the UK?s top personal development coaches. I was the person who zipped around the room with a microphone, anytime a member of the audience had a question for the speaker.

Last year, I did the same exercise for Marianne Williamson, one of the leading spiritual teachers in the world and it felt great to be on her platform and being completely present to her message.

By now, you must be getting an idea of where I am going with this post ? YOU too can learn to get over your fear of being in front of people and speaking.

It?s all about taking small steps towards speaking in public, and keeping going until one day you are comfortable in doing so.

If I can do it, so can you.

Here are my 10 key lessons from my breakthrough speech last week:-

1. Be Authentic and Genuine

This is the key lesson!

If you take away nothing else from this post but remember this point alone, then I?ll have fulfilled my objective for writing this post.

Just be yourself when speaking and people will GET you.

You have probably heard this many times ? and yet so many people fall down at this point when they try and emulate someone else when speaking in public.

You are unique -?? so let the world see just how unique you are.

?Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.? ? Judy Garland

I received a lot of generous feedback after my talk last week ? and most of it centred around how genuine and authentic I came across.

Now remember that there were 12 speakers at the event over 3 days i.e. 11 other speakers besides me. I wasn?t the most polished or accomplished speaker.? I broke almost all the cardinal rules of speaking from a stage. And I didn?t have any experience about selling from the platform.

Yet, people got me ? and that was because I didn?t try to be anyone else but me.

I am not the type of high energy speaker who will get everyone high-fiving every few minutes. It?s just not my style and it?s just not me.

However what the audience got to see was my own passion for helping them and contributing in some way to them and to the world.

And that?s all I could do ? be myself. So you just have to be yourself. You have to find your fire!

?You don?t fully live unless you show what genius was created when you fell to earth.? ? Nicky Pattinson

At the same time, I totally get that there?s a lot of room for improvement in my speaking style, manner of delivery, stagecraft and so on.

My journey of speaking in public on the large stage has only just begun?

2. Believe in Yourself and Value Yourself

It all starts with self-belief and knowing that you have something important to share and contribute ? and believe it or not, you do have a lot to offer to others.

Everyone has a unique life story with its own challenges and triumphs and that alone makes it worth sharing. Pick out your key learnings and share them with others in an inspiring way.

?Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy? ? Norman Vincent Peale

Believe in what you have to say and what you have to offer.?Value your products and services ? remember that what you do will inspire others and change lives.

(If anything, I undersold myself as my up-sell offer at the end of my talk offered terrific value when compared with what the other speakers over the weekend were offering).

At the same time, when you are on stage in front of a large audience, it?s only natural to be a bit nervous ? but no matter how daunting it may seem, remember to feel the fear and change the world anyway.

So go ahead, find your voice and strut your stuff!

3. Connect with People at a Human Level and Move them

All communication ultimately is about connecting with others at a deeper level ? and this is no different when speaking in public.

I shared my story of how experiencing unconditional love for the first time changed my life forever ? this was at an orphanage in South India.

I ended my talk with a video of?Nirvana School ? and there was what felt like pin drop silence interrupted by a couple of people in the audience sobbing away.

I clearly touched and moved them in some way.

One woman even ran out of the room crying her eyes out after she watched the video. She handed me her business card and she had scrawled on it how I had changed her life in 90 minutes!

She met me afterwards and hired me to coach her through her own book journey. And all because I touched her at a deep level.

(Side note ? is it possible to cry your eyes OUT? Just wondering?)

Remember ? a speech can change a life.?

The key is to connect with others at a deeper level ? and then you just let the magic and miracles take place.

4. See Yourself as the Expert You Are

Always remember that YOU are an ?expert?!

The realisation that over 300 people had turned up early on a sunny Sunday morning to listen to my talk strangely didn?t put any pressure on me. And that was because I knew I had a lot of useful information to share with them.

If you know your stuff and you are confident about putting it across well, then you are certain to shine on any speaking stage.

Also, knowing that most of your audience would rather die than be in your shoes on the stage makes it easier to know and accept that you are an expert and you have something useful to share with them.

Of course, it goes without saying that you have to know your stuff! But you don?t need to be a world authority either ? just enough for the needs and expectations of your audience.

5. Tell Your Story

The most amazing thing about speaking in public is how through your stories you can dramatically change someone?s life.

People can be inspired to do things in a different way ? and their life and the world will never be the same again.

I shared the story of how my first book got published after I ran a fundraising event for Comic Relief in my local coffee shop in St Johns Wood, Central London. I was even coerced into putting on the red wig again on the stage!

That day of making a fool of myself with a red wig all for a good cause ultimately led to my first book and then the second book ? Get the Life you Love. A classic example of giving and then receiving much more back!

People love stories ? so share your stories of the ups and downs of your life ? and how you overcame the sort of challenges they might face too. Show them how they can also overcome similar challenges.

Share your stories ? educate, inform and inspire others.

6. Come from a Place of Wanting to Contribute, Share and Teach

When you genuinely come from a place of wanting to contribute and help others, magic happens!

About 10 minutes into my talk, according to a friend in the audience, I visibly relaxed and it felt like I was in the flow. Looking back, I remember no longer feeling nervous at all and my voice also became more confident.

At that moment, I felt really privileged to be in front of all these people and able to help them with their own book publishing and marketing journeys.

Somehow, I got into the flow and I put myself out of the picture.

So look at how you too can bring this mentality into your own public speaking.

7. Learn from other Speakers

I was lucky in a way that the scheduled slot for my talk was for Sunday morning at 9.30 ? the time when some of the people in the audience would have normally gone to church:-).

This allowed me to attend the previous two days to learn from the 8 speakers who were speaking before me. And I learnt a lot from their different styles, energy, authenticity and overall persona.

I felt empowered to know that I was going to be on the same stage as them.

So take up all opportunities you get to see and hear other public speakers in action. By just learning one thing from each speaker, you?ll soon build up your own skills and confidence. Just get started on your ladder of learning and take one step at a time ? you just don?t know where your speaking career is going to take you.

?Take the first step in faith. You don?t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step? ? Dr Martin Luther King

You can also study and learn from some of the great orators of our time such as Dr Martin Luther King.

Keep learning from others?

Dr Martin Luther King

8. Preparation and Rehearsal

It goes without saying that you have to prepare your talk ? but I?ll say it anyway:-).

For my presentation, I had over 100 slides to get through in 90 minutes and though I got through them all, in hindsight this was far too many. The slides stopped me from engaging much more with the audience.

Also, looking back I would have rehearsed my talk a lot more than I did but having been through the slides many times, I had a very clear idea of what I was going to cover in my talk.

In your case, do prepare thoroughly and before your event, do find a trial audience to rehearse in front of. Ask for critical and specific feedback.

9. Accept Help from Others

I am truly honoured and privileged to have had so much help from so many people before, during and even after my presentation that helped me with my debut on the big stage.

My friend Kavit Haria gave me critical feedback into my presentations slides and my mentor Philip Khan-Panni, who was also in the audience, emphasised the need for one strong coherent message throughout my talk.

One of the people who attended the event, Edward Field, gave me a very thorough breakdown of my talk and how I could improve it from a content, style and theatrical viewpoint.

Then earlier this week, Carole Spiers, who trains professional speakers, spent an hour with me and gifted me a thorough analysis and suggestions for improving. And all this simply because she wants to help with my growth.

Ian ?Maxi? Jackson, Sabine Kohler and Ian Sumner were three friendly faces in the audience and I could really feel their positive vibes from the stage.

And the highly creative and talented Sheetal Thaker jazzed up my presentation slides.

It?s actually about being open and willing to ask for and then accept help from others.

So the key is this ? be open to receiving professional and personal help from others.

People want to help you ? you simply have to ask for help.?

Give them a chance to contribute to you.

Of course, if you are really serious about being a professional speaker, then you should seriously consider working with a professional speaking coach such as Carole Spiers.

And if you need any further inspiration or encouragement, look no further than the amazing Andy McMenemy who I met that weekend ? he is the guy who ran 66 Ultra-Marathons (50Km / 31 miles) in 66 days!

10. Speak, Speak, Speak

There are so many opportunities for you to improve your speaking and to get in front of an audience.

For a start, check out Toastmasters - there?s bound to be a club local to you. This is a great way to get started with speaking in public in a supportive environment. Check out a few different clubs till you find one that really resonates with you.

You might want to also consider joining your local debating society.

As for other speaking and learning opportunities, ask around amongst your family, friends, work colleagues and other people in your community. Also put it out there on all your Social Media channels. Simply let everyone know that you are up for speaking in public.

So many organisations such as clubs and even schools are always looking for interesting speakers who can add value to their members.

Start with small audiences and soon you will rapidly build up your confidence and expertise to speak in front of a larger crowd.

As you progress, you can consider joining up a professional group such as the Professional Speakers Association in the UK and the National Speakers Association in the USA. Find a similar organisation in your own country.

Bonus Key Point:-

So those are my ten key learning points from my speaking event. But here?s something else I would like you to remember:-

No matter what, enjoy the experience and be prepared to learn from it.

If you don?t enjoy it, why would you even do it?

What would I do differently next time?

I learnt a lot from my first ever large speaking event and there are a number of things I would do differently. You too should bear these points in mind:-

  1. Prepare much more in advance.
  2. Practise and rehearse in front of a small audience a few times.
  3. Get some voice training.
  4. Have more movement on the stage ? as long as it was congruent with my message.
  5. Pause more between my key sentences.
  6. Have fewer slides and more spoken words. Switch off the projector if need be.
  7. Get more audience engagement with direct questions to them.
  8. Make my up-sell offer simpler and more focussed

These are all areas for me to work on before my next event.

Final Thoughts for You

I started off by talking about talking about the fear of public speaking and how most people would rather die than be in front of a group of people.? But by focussing on the bigger picture and your key message, you can overcome any fear!

So finally, here are the 3 key questions that I started my presentation at the Bootcamp:-

  • What are the principles YOU live your life by?
  • What difference are you here to make in the world?
  • What?s your BIG message for the world and when will you get it out there?

And this is the key question that I ended my talk:-

You only have one life ? are you ready to make it BIG?

Well, are you!?

What?s Next for You?

If you are remotely interested in speaking in public, I urge you to get started on your journey as soon as possible. If I can do it, you can do it too.

To get you going, I suggest you go through the above key points again and get started today, no matter how small. Then do whatever is necessary for you to get your message out there ? whether it?s through your speaking or also through your books.

What?s Next for Me?

I want to do much more professional speaking and make a greater impact. So if you or anyone you know is looking for an inspirational speaker, please contact me.

Though I can speak around many personal development topics, I would initially like to focus on the following:-

  • How to use Social Media to Get your Book and Message out There
  • How to Get the Life you Love and Make the World a Better Place at the Same Time
  • How to Bring Personal Social Responsibility into your Life and your Workplace

Of course I can tailor my talk to your requirements.

Make It Happen Coaching

If you would like coaching to make it happen in any area of your life, please contact me and we can discuss how we can work together. I have 3 different packages to suit your needs.

Also, I am still open to taking on further coaching clients from the offer I made at the Millionaire Author?s Bootcamp. If you are interested in making a success of your book, then email me and request the slides from my presentation ? we can then discuss the way forward.

It?s high time you got your message out there!

Deciding which communication equipment to choose from is somewhat an agony because of the numerous products in market today, just always remember one concept quality doesn't mean top dollar.

IP network Unit - it can range from 4 ports up to 32 ports per unit to accommodate your needs, but it is advised to settle for a unit that has a few extra ports than what you need just in case you need to add a couple of extra phones in the future. The IP network would be the soul of your business telephony system primarily because PBX systems are IP based be sure to invest quite enough time before purchasing in this end since it can dictate the pace of your calls. Time could be running short for Cincinnati head coach Michelle Salmon, who will undoubtedly be under a microscope for a pivotal fifth season in charge of the Bearcats. After a promising first season in charge in 2008, it?s been all downhill since, with last season?s dismal effort one of the lowest points in program history. It?s a massive departure from when, for a few seasons, Cincinnati was on top of the college soccer world, or at least to the extent that your run of the mill mid-major can be on top of the college soccer world. Meridy Glenn?s side strung together seasons of sixteen, twenty, and seventeen wins one after the other to go along with a Conference USA Title in 2001 and Conference USA Tournament titles in 2001 and 2002. More impressively, the Bearcats got to the Sweet Sixteen in 2001 after a famous victory over Notre Dame and then to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season later.

And then the magic went away quite abruptly. Cincy sank back into the depths from which they emerged and suffered through five straight losing seasons from 2003 on until Glenn departed following the 2007 season. In between that time, the Bearcats had moved into a much harsher jungle, trading in Conference USA for the unforgiving clime of the Big East. Needless to say, the early years of the transition were not fruitful for Cincy as the team could be found more often than not in the bottom tier of the league.

The Bearcats found a replacement in the form of Salmon, who had worked minor miracles at Ball State in her brief time in Muncie. Indeed, after one season in charge, it looked as if Cincinnati had made a very astute choice in management with Salmon delivering the program?s first winning season since 2002 while getting the Bearcats to their first Big East Tournament and recording the program?s first postseason win in their new conference against St. John?s. Second season syndrome bit hard in 2009 though, and the Bearcats slid back to another losing record and missed out on the postseason once again, with 2010 being little better for the club, despite a non-conference win over Wisconsin.

After finishing in a tie at the bottom in the league in 2010, the pressure was on in 2011 to arrest the team?s slide and get back on the right track. An opening day loss to Cal Poly was not conducive to that goal though, and despite the Bearcats recovering with two wins in a row right after, the club would still struggle for consistency, drawing with mid-majors Loyola (Ill.) and Western Carolina. Cincy entered Big East play on a two match winning streak though and extended it with a win at DePaul for a quick three points in league play.

It?d be the team?s last win for nearly a month, as they promptly went 0-5-2 in their next seven, shipping sixteen goals in the process. A win over Seton Hall ensured the Bearcats wouldn?t be finishing on bottom of the league again, but two losses to close out the season left Salmon?s side in an unflattering fourteenth in the league when all was said and done. It also ensured that Salmon would likely be on one of the hottest seats in a major conference going into 2012.

While Cincy weren?t exactly inspiring on either side of the ball last season on the whole, they at least managed to plug the tide of goals that swept over them in Big East play in 2010. The Bearcats didn?t exactly set the world on fire, still giving up over a goal and a half, but considering that mark was much worse a season earlier, it represents progress at the very least. Offensively though, Cincinnati were uninspiring last season, not meeting the goal a game mark in the league and generally looking toothless up front. Scoring options were certainly limited last year, as only seven players scored goals, and two of those depart this year after graduation.

The good news may be that the club does return the top two leading scorers in the form of Mackenzie Grause and Jazmine Rhodes, who combined for half the club?s goals last season. They?ve still got some room to grow as well, as neither is a senior this year. More than anything though, the Bearcats need a star to emerge to help carry the team from their chronic doldrums. Given some of the promising recruits scheduled to come into the program the next three years, you?d bet on that star arriving sooner rather than later. Whether she arrives soon enough to save Salmon?s neck in the hot seat is another matter entirely.

Goalkeepers

The Bearcats were bold in tabbing true freshman Kristina Utley as their starter at the beginning of the season, and the Californian repaid the faith shown in her by holding the starting spot and so nearly playing every minute in goal for the club as a rookie. Utley had come into the program as a relatively anonymous recruit but ended up being a decent find and could be the club?s answer in the short and long-term in goal.

Senior Ashley Daniels started six matches in 2010 but was marginalized last year and may not even be assured of the backup role with the addition of hotshot recruit Natalie Smith. A regional ODP mainstay as a club player, Smith could well win the backup role if she isn?t tabbed for a redshirt this season. Then again, if she lives up to her potential, she might just challenge for more right off the bat.

Defenders

Cincy could face a tough time of it on the backline without a pair of starters and with depth looking a bit limited. Kelli Pawelko?s bombing runs down the right became a familiar sight for Bearcat fans over the past four years, and the Lemont native saved her most prolific offensive season for last, leading the side with five assists as a senior. The club also must do without Erin Kaufman, a reserve forward for the first few seasons of her collegiate career who made a transition to center-back before her junior season. She was nearly unshakable from the starting lineup after that point and ended up starting every match in defense for the club in 2011. Also gone is Kay Young, a starter on and off for three years before last season where she ended up being one of the top options off the bench, with seventeen reserve appearances for the club.

Junior Kate Schmidt will likely be the club?s go-to player in the middle this year after starting every match last season. Schmidt had racked up nine starts as a rookie but really took until last year to come into her own and even tabled her first career goal in 2011 with a strike against UConn. Who partners her is a big question, with senior Liz Miller a candidate. Miller started four games in 2010 but none last year and was mostly used off the bench in her junior year. On the flanks, Jae Atkinson seems like a lock at left-back if healthy. Atkinson began the year as a constant in the lineup but only featured in five league games, and Salmon will be hoping for a full and productive season from the sophomore this year.

Canadian senior Kaylee Dakers is another option out wide after eight starts a season ago for the Bearcats. A versatile player capable of playing in defense or midfield, Dakers saw most of her time in defense last year and started the club?s final four matches. Depth isn?t exactly great, but the club does add some freshman defenders to the mix. They?ll be expected to help continue the club?s improvement in defense, but losing two starters, including Pawelko, won?t make matters easy.

Midfielders

This unit loses just a single starter from last season, but it?s a big loss, with the club saying farewell to Logan Ballinger. More than anything else, the club will miss Ballinger?s sheer versatility. A defender for all of 2010, Ballinger would see duties in both midfield and at left-back as a senior. The hometown product showed no hesitation in pulling the trigger, leading the team in shots on the season and finishing with three goals and two assists, including a brace against Seton Hall in the league. Depth also takes a blow with the early loss of Katie Johnson, who had functioned as one of the club?s top reserves for three seasons here.

The fulcrum in the midfield in Cincy?s 4-3-3 system is likely to be sophomore Megan Cravenor, who acquitted herself quite nicely as a rookie last year, starting every match at defensive midfielder. Cravenor didn?t get involved offensively that much but showed she can still make things happen when she did, scoring against Notre Dame. Classmate Christi Howard was equally influential as a rookie last year, also making nineteen starts and chipping in with three goals during her freshman year. The most dramatic of her scoring efforts was a late winner against Northwestern in August, and the hometown native should continue to be a mainstay in the lineup this year.

Finding someone to replace Ballinger in the starting lineup could be key for this unit. Junior Katie Buczek was a top reserve with some spot starts last year and added a couple of assists to the cause and might be considered a top candidate for the vacant starting role. Sophomore Elizabeth Wargo wasn?t quite as involved offensively but still made thirteen appearances off the bench last year and likely would?ve made more had injury not taken her out late. The club will also likely be looking for a comeback from junior Natalie Domanic, who played in eleven games as a rookie but missed all of last year. Cravenor and Howard are nice building blocks for this unit, but they?re still both young and now without their senior leader beside them, meaning this unit could be up and down at times this year.

Forwards

A priority for Cincy will likely be finding a replacement for departed senior Emily Hebbeler, one of the team?s constants in the lineup over the past three seasons. Hebbeler looked to be on the way to stardom for the Bearcats after six goals as a sophomore but struggled to live up to those expectations after, with her goals total dipping for two straight season after. Hebbeler would score three in seven early last year but ended up firing goose eggs in league play, not scoring in the team?s last eleven games, though she did finish with four assists.

Luckily for the Bearcats, some of the scoring slack was picked up by the young duo of Rhodes and Grause. A towering junior from Long Beach, Rhodes again showed improvement after a solid freshman season by scoring five goals on the year, including golden goals against the College of Charleston and league rivals DePaul. Grause was a big hit as a rookie with six goals and three assists, including three goals and two assists on one weekend against the College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina. She?d slow down a bit later in the year, with just two goals in the league, but Grause still showed tantalizing signs of talent for the future with the Bearcats.

Senior Evi Ranson and junior Alexis Scott were relatively sparsely used as reserves last year and may have trouble holding off the club?s bright young thing for Hebbeler?s vacated starting spot. True freshman Laura Rose comes in with plenty of plaudits and potential and will be expected to make a big contribution right off the bat for the club. It?s not a very deep group, but there?s enough potential here to think that Cincy could be moving on up offensively this year.

Outlook

The Bearcats might consider going with the same starting group for so many matches last season part blessing, part curse. On the one hand, it allowed the club to build some continuity (even though it didn?t exactly work out in the final table). On the other, it leaves the team facing something of an uphill battle when graduation hits hard like it does this year. There?s some very intriguing young talent on the club, especially up front, where the likes of Grause, Rhodes, and potentially Rose, could be an exciting group to watch against Big East foes.

But proven depth is in short supply, as is overall experience, which has to temper hopes severely this season for the Bearcats. If the youngsters don?t tighten up in key moments, Cincy could make an outside run at the postseason. More than likely though, the Bearcats may have to be content with marginal gains in a building process that may well truly test the patience of the Bearcats brass as Salmon tries to continue to build a contender.

Success of fertility treatment may approach natural birth rate

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A groundbreaking study of nearly 250,000 U.S. women reveals live birth rates approaching natural fertility can be achieved using assisted reproductive technology, where eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries, combined with sperm and then returned to the woman's body.

The research, led by Michigan State University's Barbara Luke and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlights what factors help or hinder getting pregnant using assisted reproductive technology, or ART. The results indicate that when there are favorable patient and embryo characteristics, live birth rates with ART can approach those of natural fertility.

"This is good news for women who are trying to have a child," said Luke, a researcher in the College of Human Medicine's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology.

The number of ART treatments has more than doubled in the past 10 years, and live birth rates traditionally have been reported per cycle, or per one course of treatment. While that is easily calculated and is the method used by national registries across the world, Luke's team sought to estimate cumulative success rates with continued treatment.

"Women and families want to know the overall chances they will get pregnant, not necessarily whether they will get pregnant during a specific cycle," Luke said.

Data were obtained from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology's Clinic Outcome Reporting System for women undergoing treatment between 2004 and 2009. The system contains data on more than 90 percent of all clinics performing ART treatments in the United States.

The study of 246,740 women revealed 57 percent of women achieved a live birth via ART treatment, and 30 percent of all ART cycles resulted in a live birth. Success rates declined with increasing age for women using their own eggs, especially for those ages 38 years and older, but not for women using donor eggs.

The estimated natural fertility rate of the general population is about 20 percent per month, and estimated rates of conceiving spontaneously are 45 percent, 65 percent and 85 percent after three, six and 12 months, respectively.

The study looked at factors such as patient age, diagnosis, response to treatment, cryopreservation and the stage at which embryos were transferred. Two major factors that influence ART success are favorable patient characteristics (specifically age) and good embryo quality. Among older women, live birth rates can be substantially improved with continued treatment and a change to donor eggs.

"Although the decision to use donor eggs is a very personal one, these analyses provide information regarding the likelihood of a live birth using this option," said Luke.

These results also could guide regulations governing health insurance coverage for infertility treatment. The number of treatment cycles covered by insurance is typically limited to two or three. The findings demonstrate that when using a woman's own eggs, the success rates continue to rise beyond two to three cycles; additionally, the study may help providers and women decide when it is appropriate to change to donor eggs.

The study team was made up of researchers from MSU, University of Michigan, Redshift Technologies in New York, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Cornell Medical Center in New York, Columbia University Medical Center in New York, Spectrum Health Medical Group in Grand Rapids and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

Google sends Chromebooks to some Best Buy and Dixons stores

Google is getting serious about spreading the reach of Chromebooks. At its day two I/O keynote, it just revealed that the Chrome OS laptops are in 100 Best Buy retail stores across the US, effective today. British stores are getting a similar amount of care with a Chromebook presence in Dixons stores throughout the UK. We're still waiting on more details, such as which models will grace shelves, but there's good reason to suspect that Samsung's Series 5 550 will be front and center. If you haven't had the chance to make it out to a library or a cross-country flight to try a Chromebook for yourself, all you'll have to do now is swing by the local electronics shop to give that cloud computer a real shakedown.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's developer conference at our event hub!

Stocks end higher after new housing data

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks rebounded Tuesday after upbeat data on home prices, but the outlook was clouded by doubts about a summit on the European debt crisis this week.

Major U.S. stock indexes recovered part of Monday's sharp losses of more than 1 percent. However, an air of caution remained as Spanish borrowing costs jumped and U.S. consumer confidence fell to its lowest in five months in June.

"Certainly in the United States stocks are nicely priced, and for a long-term investor it is an attractive entry point, but then what about this macro risks hovering around the market? I think it's having a dampening effect," said John De Clue, regional investment director at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Minneapolis.

Spanish bond yields rose after demand at a bill sale fell despite significantly higher yields as hopes faded that the European Union summit later this week would produce game-changing crisis measures. Madrid formally asked on Monday for funds to bail out its banks in a move some see as a prelude for a full-blown bailout of the euro zone's fourth-largest economy.

S&P/Case Shiller data showed home prices in 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping economists' expectations for a 0.4 percent gain.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp said it was considering splitting into two publicly traded companies, and sources familiar with the matter said publishing would be separated from entertainment. Its shares jumped.

Facebook shares jumped a day before the underwriters of the social network site's recent IPO can make public their research on the company.

Congress to hold a hearing tomorrow on the Future of Video

Generic TV image

If you're reading this, then you're probably always looking ahead at what technology might bring next. Tomorrow at 10AM ET, US Congress members of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will be doing that too. The specific segment of the market being discussed is video and on the docket to testify is a who's who of the video business. The old guard, NCTA and the MPAA, is being represented by Michael Power -- yes, the previous Chairman of the FCC -- and Michael O'Leary, respectively. On the other side are representatives from Dish Network, Sky Angel, Netflix, Roku and Public Knowledge. So yeah, this could get interesting. The NCTA has already starting posturing on its blog, Cable Tech Talk, with a post highlighting all the wonderful changes in the video distribution industry in the past 20 years -- however, curiously, the upwardly creeping price of the average bill wasn't mentioned. Of course a subcommittee hearing is just the first of a very long process towards real change, and while we'd be shocked if any of our ideas are implemented anytime soon, it's good to see some movement in Washington on a topic we care about.

Existence of God(s)

I often see how they claim to know of the existence or non-existence of god/gods/goddesses. Theists claim proof in faith, scriptures or spiritual experience. Atheists often say lack of evidence negates the claim but as trying to prove non-existence I see that as a claim to that needs evidence. A negation of a negative is a plus and a negation of the positive is a minus. A rational thinking human being wouldn't side with any side and wouldnt claim such biased statements as: "the burden of proof doesnt apply to atheists". Well atheists CLAIM the non-existence of deities, so there IS the burden of proof. If they said that they didn't need proof, then it is just opinion and not fact. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but never EVER should an opinion be rendered as a fact.

But where I am an agnostic theist, I also share the opinions of strong agnostics and apathetic agnostics. Strong agnosticism = "I do not know if deities exist or not, neither do you." Apathetic agnosticism = "No proof for or against, no one is right. But I could care less if they exist or not."

How do you feel about it?

PS: I dont want any "God doesnt exist is fact due to no evidence" because you cannot bring the evidence yourself against it as both sides are at the current time just opinions.
