As the deadline looms for Democrats and Republicans in Washington to come to an agreement on the sequester, many Bay Area residents are left asking the question: How will this affect me?
We've put together a guide of the some programs that will be hardest hit if the sequester happens as scheduled on Friday:
Meals on Wheels
In Contra Costa County, Meals On Wheels will lose $100,000--meaning the program will serve 280 fewer people per day.
Air Delays
At San Francisco International Airport, the just over two dozen air traffic controllers will be forced to take furlough days, leading to longer delays at the airport. Transportation secretary Ray LaHood warned that waits on the tarmac at major airports across the country could stretch up to 90 minutes. So bring a book.
Brain Drain
University of California San Francisco, which receives more National Institute of Health grant money than any research institution in the country, stands to lose over $28 million as a result of the sequester.
Head Start
Cuts to Head Start will mean over 8,000 low-income California children will lose access to the federally funded pre-Kindergarten program.
AIDS
The San Francisco Bay Guardian reports:
San Francisco homeless advocates are forecasting a $1 million cut in federal assistance and AIDS groups have warned that nearly $800,000 dollars in housing vouchers for AIDS patients are on the chopping block. Federal funding for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which subsidized medical care for AIDS patients, is set to be slashed by nearly 8 percent across the board.

Financial Aid
With cuts to the financial aid budget, 3,690 California students will lose the ability to pay for college under work-study programs and another 9,600 could lose their financial aid packages entirely.
Coast Guard
The U.S. Cost Guard, which resides under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security, will likely face significant cuts. If that happens, the Coast Guard will have fewer resources to rescue people whose boats run into trouble of the California coast.
It's The Economy, Stupid
After being hit hard by the recession, California has lead the nation in the creation of new jobs. Now, as the sequester threatens to put the axe to 225,000 jobs in the state, many are worrying that it could spin California back into recession.
